Secret Histories arrives next week! Enjoy a sneak peek.

September 11, 2024 By Lou

We’re one week out from the launch of Secret Histories, the penultimate chapter in DSA Season Two! I hope you’re ready for this one. There are some huge moments in this book that will shape everything that follows. Enjoy a sneak peek look at the novel below!

Secret Histories Sneak Peek

Chapter One

Never surrender. Robert Kanigher’s father taught him that at a young age. The mantra had served the boy well over the years, at the playground or in sports. He had carried it with him through multiple tours overseas, using his wits to keep those close to him safe from harm.

Surrender now seemed inevitable, however. The thought stabbed through him worse than a knife to the heart. Sweat dotted Kanigher’s brow. His hands were slick to the touch, and no amount of rubbing along his pants stopped the flow. His breath caught in his throat, tense along his shoulders and back.

“This is stupid,” he muttered. The elevator whirred upward. Lights beamed from the sides of the underground car as the elevator rose to the surface from the Bunker. The words needed to be said. More were necessary, but they fell flat when he ran them through his mind.

The figure before him didn’t bother to turn around. She continued to stare straight ahead; blonde hair hid her reaction. With a bowed head, she waited for the ding of the elevator car and the opening of the doors. Her fate waited outside, and there wasn’t a damn thing Kanigher could do to help her.

“This was your idea,” Susan Metcalf said.

Kanigher tried to laugh, but sorrow drowned the jest. “Why do you think I said it?”

The car stopped with a jolt. On instinct, Kanigher reached for the closest wall, then stopped. The woman in front of him made no motion at all.

Doors opened. Daylight shifted inside, blanketing the car with the early afternoon sun. Warm air greeted them, leaving all thought of the winter buried in the past. It would have made for a terrific day. Kanigher felt the calm wind along his cheeks and wondered if things would ever feel so good again. The day should have been theirs to seize, to embrace a quiet moment and savor every second.

But that was not to be, nor would such a serene day have been possible. Too much had occurred of late between the team. There had been too many secrets, all on Metcalf’s side, and all culminated in the truth about her relationship with a man known to them as the Witness.

Because of Metcalf, and her innate ability to hide the truth from those around her, everything the DSA had worked for over the years had shattered. Kanigher wanted nothing more than to believe they could work through her secrets to find a road back to the way things had been. It would take time, however, and time had run out for them.

“It’s too open out there,” Kanigher said. His hand shot out for the figure at the door. It fell away with his gaze, unable to bear looking at her. “We’ll be sitting ducks.”

“Not you,” Metcalf said. “Me.”

She made no move. Her shadow fell upon him as the sunlight washed over her. She didn’t turn to look at him with those cold-as-steel-blue eyes that somehow always burrowed straight to his soul. He just wanted to see them one last time.

“Susan, I’m sorry about—”

“Let’s get this over with, Bobby,” Metcalf interrupted. The words had already been spoken, the arguments nothing but circular motions of redundancy. Everything had passed between them over the years. Nothing remained to change what was coming.

The woman left the elevator behind. Daylight enveloped her slender frame. Kanigher crept toward the door. He made no motion to leave, the instructions clear before their arrival. This was for her, and her alone.

“Good luck,” he called after her, knowing the futility of his words.

Neither had ever truly believed in luck. For her, skill and tactics were all that mattered. For Kanigher, it was his father’s dictum repeating in his brain.

Never surrender.

He knew better now. That had been the ideal of a child, not the compromising nature of an adult. And while Kanigher hated believing his father to be nothing more than a fool, the proof stood before him in the field that ran between the Bunker and the farmhouse outside.

Metcalf made it less than ten steps into the open before a shot cracked the silence of the peaceful afternoon. The gunshot slammed into the woman’s chest. Her body swayed from the impact, and for a moment Kanigher believed her to be okay—that somehow the bullet missed and her reaction had been nothing but instinctual.

Then she fell. No noise left her; no cry of pain or shriek of terror slipped from her lips. Susan Metcalf merely fell to the soft, green earth and didn’t move again.

How about that for a holy crap moment?!

The book only gets crazier from here. Order your signed paperback now for Secret Histories.

Get ready for some great conventions

September 4, 2024 By Lou

This is a crazy month for me. I’m roaming the area at some fantastic events throughout September and I hope you’ll join me. Here’s a list of the conventions coming up:

Flower City Con – September 13-15

I love Flower City Con. The organizers at the Mighty Monkey Corporation put on an amazing experience for fans. There is always something going on at the convention, be it signings or panels or the cosplay contest.

This is my fourth time appearing at the show. It’s a lot of fun. This year they have John Barrowman in attendance. Captain Jack will be in the building. It’s going to be so cool.

Head over to their website to find out more about this year’s show and ticket information.

Erie Comicon – September 20-22

This is my second year attending this con. It’s really well put together. I’ve never seen a team handle so much so efficiently. And they are all stellar people.

The view alone is worth the visit for this con. But this year, they have Tom and Mary Bierbaum as guests. If you don’t know, I am a HUGE Legion of Super-Heroes fan. They wrote one of the most inventive (and divisive) eras of the Legion. I freaking loved it and can’t wait to share that with them at the show.

Head over to the Erie website for ticket information and news about the growing guest list!

Buffalo Indie Lit Expo – September 28

The wonderful team over at Band of Bards comics is putting together what will hopefully be their first indie lit festival. I’m excited any time there is something aimed at the literature side of fandom, so as a fan I was already going to be attending. Thankfully, they were nice enough to ask me to join in the fun.

The Buffalo Idie Lit Expo (BILE) is an event filled with local and regional authors, artists, and creators. Presented by Buffalo-based Independent Publisher Band of Bards, it’s an event where creators can sell and promote their original works and make a new connection with the community.
The event is FREE, open to the public, and ALL AGES!
Head over to Facebook to check out the event page.

See you at the conventions this month!

Writing Update – August 28, 2024

August 28, 2024 By Lou

How is the summer over already? It can’t be, can it? Well, we’re at the end of another month, so let’s get to the writing update!

Writing Update

DSA Season Two

Season Two updates still? What are you trying to pull, Lou? I know, I know. The books are done. They are ready for you to enjoy. I’ve just spent a little time going through them ONE MORE TIME, because I am completely and totally insane. I really am my own worst enemy. The books are fantastic, though. You’re going to love how the season closes out. Then curse me out when Season Three doesn’t come out right away…

DSA Season Three

Speaking of which, the draft for the opener to Season Three is complete. Utopia Protocol is the biggest DSA adventure to date and sets off a whole chain of events that will carry through the six-book season. Lots of work to be done on this one still, but it’s a strong start that will answer some long-standing questions.

Book Two is called Three Fates and is on the docket to be drafted in September. Will that happen? I hope so, but there is a lot going on at the moment that might cause me to shuffle things around. We’ll see. I will say, this book has a moment that completely surprised me in the outlining phase. It gives me chills just thinking about it. You’re going to lose your minds when you read it.

Coventry

I’ve been delving into a new series over the course of the summer. It’s called Coventry and is part myth-building and part urban fantasy. Two short stories have been drafted that you’ll be able to enjoy over on the Patreon page this December. The lore behind what will eventually be a series of novels has been keeping me up at night for weeks. It’s some of the most ambitious storytelling I’ve ever attempted, and I’m loving how it is all coming together.

More to share on these soon.

Miscellaneous Nonsense

I always shoot for the moon when it comes to my deadlines and writing goals. This summer was meant to be much more productive. It didn’t materialize for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the death of my laptop.

Losing my most essential tool was bound to happen. The laptop was ancient. I was simply hoping to eke out a few more months before replacing it. Then the “O” key stopped working. Then the battery stopped taking a charge. And then, and then… You get the picture.

Switching to a new unit has been more challenging than writing entire books in some respects, but I’m almost back up to speed. We’ll see if I’ve forgotten to transfer over any vital information and how much it will screw me over down the line.

Read Army in the Obelisk Part Nine today

August 21, 2024 By Lou

The final third of the epic serial starts today! Army in the Obelisk Part Nine brings the Loren-Standish conflict to a head.

Read Army in the Obelisk now.

I’ve always been a big fan of structure. When putting together a twelve-part serial, figuring out the proper pacing for not only the big reveals but all the major subplots being juggled throughout turned out to be quite the challenge.

Somehow–I refuse to take credit for how it happened–the Loren-Standish subplot worked out perfectly in the narrative. It opens with Part Three, escalates in Part Six, and closes out here in Part Nine. It still amazes me to think about that. Kudos, to those writing gods watching over me.

Bringing Standish back.

I love a good villain. Standish was never meant to be more than a foil for Loren in Tales from Portents. He certainly grew to be quite a bit more than some minor player in the first half of Greystone. Being able to explore how their relationship evolved from their first interaction in Gremlins was a real bonus when crafting Army in the Obelisk.

There were questions I felt should be answered somewhere in the series. Army served as the perfect vehicle for that exploration.

Part Nine is another tale that doesn’t rely on any of the fantasy elements that typically infuse Portents. This is a straight-up murder investigation that goes off the rails… quickly. I won’t give anything away here, but if you know Standish and his skill set, I think you’ll completely understand the actions taken in the story.

For those waiting for the big confrontation with Djuhuty, you’ll have to wait just a little bit longer. It’s coming and it is massive, but this part is dedicated to long-time readers of the series.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the journey so far. This book was an absolute dream to put together and I’m very proud of how it stands up after all the scrutiny I’ve put it under over the years.

Army in the Obelisk Part Eight Starts Today

July 24, 2024 By Lou

Army in the Obelisk continues this week with the launch of Part Eight! The Final Piece is a critical chapter of the serial, with returning foes and some great action scenes. The romantics out there get the chance to see Greg Loren in a new light as he enjoys a night out with Patricia Fleming. What more can you ask for?

Head over to Patreon and start reading today.

There are certain segments of the serial I struggled with. The Final Piece was one of them, not because of anything inherent in the plot. Everything was pretty nailed down before I started in. No, any conflicts I had were on the writing side. The opening action scene needed a lot of planning done ahead of time. There was the layout of the apartment to consider, the security measures in place, figuring out how Soriya inserted herself inside the scene, as well as the POV issue it caused. There were a lot of little obstacles that needed answering before drafting, and plenty more to iron out in the editing phase.

Not every scene is straightforward, and one of the things I’ve tried to do over my author career was embrace those difficult scenes. I want the challenge. I want to figure out solutions rather than run away in terror. It can be hard, it can cause some sleepless nights, but the final product always ends up stronger for the challenge.

Army in the Obelisk Part Eight

The first two chapters of The Final Piece are now available on Patreon. Follow the page and start reading now.
