Hammer and Anvil Cover Reveal

May 21, 2019 By Lou

Just a short missive today. It was a whirlwind weekend at the Nickel City Con and I’m in recovery mode. What a great show. If you made it and picked up a book, you have my thanks. I hope you enjoyed the experience and that your first dip into the Greystone world is a good one.

What comes next is going to be even better!

Hammer and Anvil Cover Reveal

This was never meant to be. When I originally conceived the training period pieces describing Soriya’s formative years they were always smaller in my mind. Short stories akin to those found in Tales from Portents or Pathways in the Dark – 8 chapters, in and out, with a brief nod to the larger story at play.

They would come out one per year and only for newsletter subscribers. Easy peasy.

Then I started outlining. The story grew. The pieces became more intricate and the narrative took over.

I couldn’t be happier with how it is coming together and wanted to share the cover design as soon as I received it!

A special thanks to Marraii Design for the phenomenal job at putting this together. Nat is a true artist and takes such care to hit all the right beats with her covers.

Release Info

I’m still nailing down a specific date but you can expect Hammer and Anvil to come out in early October of this year! It’s going to be a crazy month but I am so freaking excited.

Let me know what you think of the cover at lou@loupaduano.com. I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading!

Flower City Comic Con is this weekend!

April 9, 2019 By Lou

If you’re in the Rochester area you have to stop by the Blue Cross Arena this weekend for the Flower City Comic Con!

April 13th and 14th!

Two days of incredible deals, celebrity guests, panels and cosplay, this show has it all. I’m so excited to be a part of the guest list. It looks to be a fantastic lineup of talent.

Greystone Deal

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it here on the blog but for shows like this I offer a huge discount on my paperbacks. Typically, a Greystone novel costs $13.99 online. Plus tax. Plus shipping in some cases. I hate having to charge that. Hate it.

That’s why I love these conventions.

This weekend, you can get any Greystone novel for $10. No tax. No shipping. And a sweet autograph from yours truly.

That’s not even the end of it. The deals get sweeter the more books you buy and all come with a genuine scribble from the author and his eternal gratitude.

2 Books = $18
3 Books = $25
4 Books = $30
And all 5 Greystone novels are only $35!

Why I do it…

It’s not for the money. Much as I would love to live off this amazing gig of mine, the discounts are there to promote Greystone to a local audience. To spread the word about my writing and hopefully earn a few devoted fans along the way.

I might not bring home enough to pay off that last college loan but if I am able to connect with a few special readers at each occasion, if I can inspire someone to dig into the world of Soriya and Loren just a little, I know I’ve done my job.

Beyond that, the joy is in being able to talk to people. To hear what they’ve been reading and what drew them to the table. Anytime I am able to break away from the cave and step into the light is a good one. A good exercise for promoting the series and for showing readers how enthused I am to keep living with these characters and the stories coming up for them.

See you in Rochester!

I do hope you’ll make the trip. I’ve spoken with a number of the guests already and they are so pumped to meet you, to share their stories with you. Pick their brain, ask them about their pets or their kids. These are regular folk doing everything they can to give you the best convention experience they can.

Enjoy it and I’ll see you there!

Personal Reflections on Greystone

October 1, 2018 By Lou

I had this idea in 2007. A buddy-cop dramedy about a stay-at-home mom and a detective tracking down myths and legends. Soriya carried the Greystone, a weapon she knew nothing about – one that came to be the center of the story. Loren was there as well, his story nowhere near as fleshed out.

Eleven years later and look where we are.

Five Greystone novels into the saga of these two characters that have changed so completely from those early days.

Reflections on the series

It wasn’t until 2016 that I figured out the story. Okay, that’s not entirely accurate. I wrote the original version of The Medusa Coin in 2012 so there was some indication where Greystone could go…

I didn’t see the potential of the arc until I wrote Tales from Portents. When I realized these smaller stories could carry the narrative and open the possibilities for these characters, that was the turning point for me. Suddenly the map became clear for the entire arc. Three novels, two short story collections, each offering pieces of the puzzle until the conclusion.

Setting the deadlines for each book was pretty key to making the idea work. If I had limited myself to one book per year, I don’t think I would have had the drive to push through my own fears to make Greystone a reality.

Fun deviations

I tried to change the ending of The Medusa Coin several times. I was so angry that I spent an inordinate amount of energy building up the Loren/Soriya relationship only to tear it down in what was considered the second book at the time.

There was a version where they were secretly pretending to drift apart to draw out the threat. There was another where Soriya was doing it to protect Loren and he saw through it, grateful to have a friend like her.

They were messy and complicated, never quite fitting where the story was meant to go.

Each book was a challenge, from conception to execution. Each one caused me to sweat and bleed to pull the narrative together. Yet, A Circle of Shadows only took 16 days to write. I’ve never written anything so quickly and NEVER felt a first draft was as strong.

If only things went that smoothly for every project…

Regrets?

There are a few. Greystone was meant to be more metaphysical in nature; the concept of the Bypass as a corridor to infinity, a vital component of each adventure. The idea of Mentor and Soriya choosing their names/titles as positions of power was supposed to more prominent.

I wavered on it mostly because I knew my audience wasn’t ready for it. Having a character named Mentor alone drove a few readers away in the first novel.

I think Signs of Portents, as a whole, could use a new edit. A tighter, leaner version to fall in line with where the narrative turns by The Medusa Coin. Again, I have Tales from Portents to thank for that change in style. The restrictive nature of short stories really forced me to tune in on each moment, utilize each chapter to its fullest. Some might feel the short story collections aren’t as pertinent to the overall design of the series but to me they strengthened me as an author more than anything I’ve ever written.

Speaking of Tales from Portents… I had this notion of putting Resurrectionists first in the collection. It was to showcase Soriya and Loren first. It was to make sure previewers on retail sites didn’t get a full story and more, before hitting the purchase button.

It shouldn’t have happened. I wish I put the story in the proper order so it flowed perfectly timeline-wise.

The Journey Continues…

Two and a half years. I picked up the draft of Signs of Portents in March 2016 and set to work on completing this saga from start to finish.

I made it to the halfway point.

Yes, A Circle of Shadows closes out Loren’s story. It, however, fails to answer some of the most important questions of the series. No, I won’t spill the beans on what is to come but if you look closely enough you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Portents will always be part of me. It is in everything I write, everything I imagine, and it creeps to the surface every time I talk about the books.

I can’t wait to visit again soon.

Blackmail Commentary – Losing the Supernatural

July 5, 2018 By Lou

The author commentary of Pathways in the Dark continues with more insight into the Blackmail tale! SPOILER WARNING is in place!

The truth and nothing but…

I set rules when I write. I create a standard by which all stories set within a specific universe or series should adhere. This is meant to increase reader enjoyment, to play to their expectations, and offer them exactly what they’re looking for when it comes to my stories.

Greystone is very simple. Myths and legends create mayhem and murder in the city of Portents. Soriya and Loren have to stop them. Easy peasy. It is the impetus of every story breakdown, every script, every note I take when it comes to world of Greystone.

And then Blackmail came along.

Losing the supernatural.

It was never my intention. When I settled on a Myers story, my first instinct was to come up with a supernatural angle for her to confront. In terms of scope the Eyes in the Storm story from Tales from Portents sprang to mind. A way to build a world around this supporting character while also digging into who she was as a character.

Nothing worked.

Nothing felt true to Myers.

Because her story doesn’t come from the same place as Soriya and Loren. When it comes to Samantha Myers, her story is built around the mystery introduced in The Medusa Coin. Who is controlling her? Are they actually controlling her or is she a willing participant? And what do they have on her in the first place?

It was from these questions that Blackmail was forged. When I finally settled on delving into her past, I realized where the threat had to come from. Tying the two threads together made perfect sense from a narrative standpoint and kept the focus on Myers as a character instead of a plot heavy tale with no stakes.

Losing the supernatural, however, came with consequences…

Is this truly a Greystone tale?

If the supernatural is lost, if I break the rule that centers the universe of the series does it no longer belong? More importantly, will the reader enjoy it, having come to expect something completely different?

I struggled with this for a long time. Every revision, every readthrough, brought these doubts to the forefront and I had to justify Blackmail’s inclusion in the collection each and every time.

How did it make it through my inane questioning?

By the strength on which it stood as a character story. Myers needed more depth, she needed that extra element to proceed to Founder’s Day and A Circle of Shadows. Her mystery clouded her motivations and clarity on that front afforded her the chance at redemption or condemnation by the audience. I wanted to have that moment and continue to have those moments where you aren’t sure about her.

She represents a true threat to Loren. The unseen threat, on his end anyway.

What did you think about the change of pace for the series? A worthy exploration or did you miss the supernatural element in this tale?

I’d love to hear from you.

Blackmail Commentary – Starting Points

July 2, 2018 By Lou

Feels like it has been awhile since we’ve chatted about Pathways in the Dark, so welcome back to the author commentary on book four of the Greystone series! SPOILER WARNING is in place, though by now I’m sure you’ve read and enjoyed the collection.

Right?

Blackmail and the journey of Samantha Myers

When putting together each piece of the collection, I realized the opportunities available. This included glimpses into the lives of some of the supporting cast. With Trustfall, Ruiz was given the spotlight. For Blackmail, it was time to dig into Samantha Myers and her story.

Keeping readers in the dark about a mysterious character is a double edge sword. You want to keep them interesting but also want to hold back on all the answers. It’s a fine line and can work against a narrative if utilized incorrectly.

I didn’t want that to be the case with Samantha Myers.

Having a working outline for A Circle of Shadows helped in this regard. Knowing where her journey was heading allowed me some wiggle room to showcase a case personal to her, while allowing the reader a glimpse at her life.

As in the case of most of the collection, the driving force of Blackmail stemmed from The Medusa Coin. At the end of the novel, Myers calls a mysterious benefactor and we learn her motivations aren’t exactly as pure as we hoped.

But what did that mean for her? Why was she working against Loren and Soriya?

Those were questions I wanted to explore without giving away the whole mystery.

Who is Samantha Myers?

I love writing the character. Her comments, her snark, comes from a place near and dear to my heart. I love her attitude in The Medusa Coin and the down to earth nature of bringing her into the fold in this crazy series. Yet for every interaction in the novel there was little time to really delve into her story. A narrative choice and one that worked for the book but also one I wanted to rectify slightly through Pathways in the Dark.

For Blackmail, I wanted to provide an outlet for her to explore Portents without being confined to the role of a supporting player in Loren’s drama. I needed Myers to break away from the world and come into her own. In order to do that I needed a reason for her to fly solo.

Two cases of blackmail…

It wasn’t just a clever title. It was always meant to explain her situation without explicitly laying it out for the reader. Being pulled into the case, having to steal from her colleagues to pay off a blackmailer was always meant to bring to light the truth of her situation.

Her mysterious benefactor, the figure in the shadows that has placed her as Loren’s partner, is also manipulating her against her will.

Putting that personal spin on events raised the stakes in my eyes and forced Myers to come to grips with her situation.

I loved writing this story. It was definitely a challenge, something outside the norm for Greystone, but I thought it was a breath of fresh air in terms of a character piece. I’ll be discussing those challenges more next time.

Thanks for reading.
