Pathways in the Dark Arrives Next Week!

February 12, 2018 By Lou

We’re only a week out from the release of Pathways in the Dark, book four in the Greystone series. You would think it would be old hat by now but when it gets to crunch time like this I am still a nervous newbie.

And I shouldn’t be. Not for this project.

I loved putting this collection together. It pushed me in different directions. It forced me to question certain notions about Portents and the world created over the first three books.

Mostly though, it challenged me on a story level to make this separate tales connect thematically. To really push the characters with unique challenges and test them before the next big thing comes their way this fall.

What’s included?

Six tales rest at the heart of this collection. Founder’s Day, which is still available for free separate from the rest of the contents, follows Loren and Myers chasing down clues connected to the fallen Church of the Second Coming. A classic whodunit that forces Loren to face his past mistakes and choose a better path.

In Collateral, see Loren and Soriya deal with the fallout of Henry Erikson’s search for immortality from The Medusa Coin and the damage it inflicts on not only the city but their fragile partnership.

Trustfall follows Alejo Ruiz during his leave of absence from the department. Thefts are on the rise near his daughter’s college campus and he is pulled into the case with danger lurking from both friend and foe.

The Apartment is a solo Soriya tale as she works to find her place in Portents. Connecting with the city has to take a backseat as a haunting threatens the lives of two brothers and leads to a greater understanding of what is happening to the Bypass.

Blackmail puts Detective Samantha Myers in the spotlight as more of her ominous past comes to light.

And Connections follows Soriya’s newest friend Gilgamesh, from The Medusa Coin, as he is abducted by the Cult of Anubis. Can Soriya save him in time before he becomes their ultimate sacrifice? Hints at what is to come in the series are brought to light in this tale.

What are people saying about Pathways in the Dark?

“I thought it was awesome.” – Christina (Amazon Reviewer)

“This series gets better and better and better. Very highly recommended must read.” – Steve (Amazon Reviewer)

“Pathways will keep you on the edge of your seat and begging for more.” – TE (Goodreads Reviewer)

Pre-order your copy today!

The ebook is available now for pre-order at the low price of $0.99!! Paperback fans will be able to order their copy starting February 20th!

Saying Goodbye to Old Friends

January 29, 2018 By Lou

In March 2016, I sat down with a plan in mind. The Greystone Saga. Five books telling the sprawling tale of Soriya Greystone and Detective Greg Loren. The mystery of Bethany Loren’s death at the center of it, the pair faced the mysterious threats hidden under the surface of the city of Portents.

This week I put the final touches on book five. For the first time since this crazy journey began, I was able to put the words – The End – on the page. To say goodbye to old friends that have been with my every thought for the last two years is something I never imagined would be possible. Let alone bittersweet.

The Road Taken…

When I first pitched the series (to an audience of me, myself and I) Soriya was a stay-at-home mother who fought crime with her pal, Loren, while the kids were at school.

Portents existed but it held none of the mystery, none of the secrets, it would eventually come to know.

How it grew, how it changed, is the best part of this wonderful process. I don’t have the answers, I don’t know where my sense of direction stopped and the characters took the wheel. I am damn lucky they did, though.

Soriya has been my strength, my guiding light. Loren has been my resolve, my need for answers. Ruiz, my truth and the parent needed to keep the children in line. Without these three watching over me, driving the story forward, Greystone would never have existed.

As edits wind down on A Circle of Shadows, I find their voices quieting. Never leaving, not completely, because I will never be able to leave Portents for long. There is another story to tell, a larger one yet to be explored with questions that have barely been posed let alone answered.

For now, though, it is time to say goodbye to my old friends.

I am incredibly grateful they have allowed me to tell their story for as long as they have and if I never do get back to Portents, I know I’ve told the best story possible because of who they are as characters, because of the challenges they faced.

The lessons learned during the last two years have made me a better writer. They’ve opened the door to new ways of crafting stories. Character over plot. Not being afraid to upend a scene to find a better way. Questioning everything until the answers speak for themselves in the narrative.

Greystone made all of that possible.

The end for now…

Tom DeFalco was the master of ending his stories like this. Nothing truly ends. There are threads that remain, lives that continue even after we close the book.

That is certainly true for Greystone. Loren, Soriya, Ruiz and all the other players that have grown from that initial pitch have more stories to tell.

As I write this, there are no less than four short stories I’ve added to my schedule that take place in Portents. Some flashbacks, others a bridge to where things are headed in the second half of the series.

Like I said, their voices will never truly leave me. I wouldn’t want them to.

For now, there are new stories to tell. A new series to plot. Another to edit. New worlds and new dramas. But none would be possible without Greystone.

Goodbye old friends. See you soon.

For Parker Rose…

This book is dedicated to my daughter, Parker. Thanks to Parker, four and a half years ago I left the working world to be a full-time dad.

Best decision of my life.

I could not imagine following my writing dream without her in my corner, cheering on each new installment as they’ve come together. She is a constant reminder of why I love this job and how important it is to tell stories.

Summing up the project

There are some books where finding a theme is difficult. Where building short stories into a collection can become a chore and feel forced. Pathways in the Dark was the opposite with me. Each story flowed organically from The Medusa Coin, pulling and twisting threads that seemed to be embedded in the previous novel for the sole purpose of this collection.

A happy coincidence that I will gladly attribute to some hidden brilliance on my part.

Threats return and new ones are hinted at. Each character gets a moment to shine as the shadows close in around them.

A storm is gathering. The long night is almost upon us.

And Portents will fall.

Unless Soriya and Loren can stand together one last time.

Join the Advance Team for Pathways in the Dark

January 11, 2018 By Lou

It’s getting to be that time again. Book Four of the Greystone series arrives in six weeks! It’s insane how these dates sneak up on me. To prepare, I’m opening the doors to my Advance Team of reviewers once again!

Why should you join?

How about a FREE copy of Pathways in the Dark? Not enough? How about chances to win prizes and gift cards not offered to anyone else?

I love my advance team. They do an amazing job of spreading the word about each release and take the time to write some fantastic reviews online about the books. I understand the commitment involved, the time necessary to read a book and figure out a way to promote it. That’s why I try to thank them as much as possible for their services.

This endeavor, these books, don’t work without reviews. It takes a village and I am hoping you’ll join today to stand with us for this next book and every other to follow.

What do I have to do?

To join, email me directly at lou@loupaduano.com

You’ll be put on the list and when Pathways is sent out you’ll be the first to receive it. Digital copies only, though, as my ability to ship paperbacks is quite limited at this point.

And then? ENJOY the book! Read it, love it, live it. At the bus stop, at the dinner table, everywhere you can think to squeeze in some reading time, DO IT!

Tell your kids about the book. Tell your doctor, the stranger sitting next to you, that crazy nerd with the Jean-Luc Picard poster in his cubicle at work. Spread the word about the series!

And when it comes to release time? Review the hell out of it. Post it on your blog, your friend’s blog, your grandmother’s blog… Oh, and on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads, and Kobo. (Please and thank you…)

I’m not strict about it. I don’t push. I just know that without fine reviewers like you, this series won’t stick and I want people to love Soriya and Loren as much I do for a long, long time!

If you’re interested in joining the advance team, let me know today at lou@loupaduano.com.

I can’t wait to hear from you.

Thanks for reading!

Founder’s Day Launch!

December 5, 2017 By Lou

It’s finally here! Founder’s Day is available now!

The sequel to Resurrectionists arrives and Greg Loren is put to the ultimate test.

On the eve of the Founder’s Day Celebration in the heart of Portents, someone is murdering city officials and dressing them up in a signature black robe and cloak. Detective Greg Loren and his new partner, Samantha Myers, are called onto the case only to discover a startling fact linking the murders to the deaths of each of the city’s founders.

What do the murders have to do with the Church of the Second Coming? Will Loren be able to find the killer before the entire city of Portents is at risk?

The seeds are planted for the end of the first cycle of the Greystone series in this tale.

This tale also serves as a primer for the upcoming Greystone Collection, Pathways in the Dark, coming February 20, 2018!

Why this tale from Pathways?

When putting together Tales I knew having a Soriya/Loren story as the freebie was a necessity. This time around not having them together was more important to the overall narrative. Their split is vital to where things are headed and you’ll see more of that shift in the tales preceding this one in the Pathways in the Dark collection this February.

Plus, the added bonus of tying the tale into Resurrectionists was a nice touch to keep the story flowing for the reader.

I hope you enjoy it!

Get your free copy of Founder’s Day today!

Come back next week for more commentary on The Medusa Coin!
