February Promotions

February 12, 2019 By Lou

I’ve been slacking on the marketing side of late. My fault, for many reasons, not the least of which is a focus on building new content. But while I toil away on the DSA Season 1 edits and the makings of a new Greystone novel, how about some love for what has come before?

Signs of Portents is FREE this month!!

The first book in the Greystone series is FREE right now on all major platforms. Is it weird that I miss writing this book? It was such a process but the energy behind it, the thoughts that went into building the world were so much fun and thrilling at the time. Part of the upcoming novel comes from a specific moment in Signs as does most of the series. So many seeds planted and little nods to items on my very hefty checklist.

Plus, it’s a great mystery. If you haven’t already picked up a copy be sure to snag it while it’s free this month. And if you have a copy and read it, please be sure to leave a review. They are always appreciated and help out tremendously with promoting the series and soothing my fragile ego.

Download your FREE copy of Signs of Portents now.

How about more FREE books?

The SFF Book Bonanza Mega Promo is going on this week! There are over 70 titles included this month, all free for your reading pleasure. Top talent authors like Dean F. Wilson and Patty Jensen as wells as dozens more are showering you with presents this month so be sure to check them out!

Not enough for you? Tales from Portents and The Medusa Coin are on sale now!

That’s right. Not only is the first book in the Greystone series free but books 2 and 3 are only $0.99 each! This is a great time to dive into the Greystone world. I’d love to have you along for the journey and to hear your thoughts on the books.

Get your copy of Tales from Portents now!

Dive into the quest for immortality with The Medusa Coin today!

Happy Reading!

Amazon Exclusive

June 28, 2018 By Lou

This is something I’ve been toying with for the last few months. I’ve held some reticence for the change but now stand poised to go Amazon exclusive for my eBooks to test out the model.

Why Amazon Exclusive?

I love the other retailer streams. Kobo has been an amazing retailer with tons of promotions geared toward independent authors. Their customer service is fantastic as well. Smashwords’ founder, Mark Coker, is one of the best advocates of the self-publishing industry ever and I love his passion for bringing readers what they want.

The truth of the matter is that after almost two years, Amazon makes up 97% of my readership. That can’t be ignored. So as of July 1st, the Greystone series will be part of KDP Select.

What does this mean for you?

Probably nothing. If you’ve purchased a book through another retailer it will not disappear. It will always be yours and nothing will happen to it.

For those worried about not being able to order a paperback through other channels, this change only relates to the eBook. Physical copies will always be available anywhere and everywhere.

For those Kindle lovers, the benefit is all yours. Being part of KDP Select means all my books will be in the Kindle Unlimited program. You can now borrow my books from their extensive library along will thousands of others. Tell your friends!

“But I hate Amazon! They are taking over the world!”

This was one of the issues I was concerned about when considering this move. If this relates to you, if you only buy through Kobo or Smashwords is your retailer of choice, there is a solution and one I credit author Jay Allan for giving me:

  1. Buy my book through Amazon.
  2. Send me the receipt by emailing me at lou@loupaduano.com.
  3. I will send you the format of your choice. Be it ePub or PDF. Whatever works best for you.

That way everyone wins.

The Greystone Saga Volume Two…

The launch sale ends tomorrow! Snag your copy of this digital box set at $2.99 now before it jumps to its regular price of $4.99!

Thanks for reading!

A Call for Reviews

April 19, 2018 By Lou

I’ve set a few goals for myself this year. There are the usual suspects in the mix. Finish a new series of books, edit a couple sitting in the drawer next to my desk. Maybe spend some time with the family. (That would be nice…)

First and foremost on the list is asking for reviews.

Calling all reviewers

I know how difficult it can be to leave a review. You never know what to say, how long it should be, if you’re giving too much away or not saying enough. The fact remains each review is crucial to the success of a book.

I set a goal for Signs of Portents this year at 50 reviews. I would love to see it hit the mark. Right now it is at 27. Totally workable but I need your help to make it happen.

Tales from Portents and Pathways in the Dark are stuck at 9 reviews. It would be incredible if they both reached 20 by the end of the year.

The Medusa Coin had the strongest review count out of the gate thanks to my fantastic advance reader team but since then has had a total of bupkus. It is currently at 16 reviews. Let’s see what we can do to make that 25 by the end of the year.

If you’ve read both Signs of Portents and Tales from Portents consider leaving a review for The Greystone Saga Volume One which contains both books. I would love to be able to promote the box set more but with only 3 reviews it makes it very difficult to manage. If we could get it to 10 reviews it would be a big help.

I can’t do this without you.

One of the main reasons I love to write is that everything is internal. Everything stems from me and when the chips fall the final product is all mine based on my choices and what I wanted to see in the pages.

But the success of such a book is not up to me. It is up to you. Leaving a review is your voice in the process and I take each to heart. Each one is truly appreciated and I can’t say enough about the folks that have been able to leave one for each and every installment of the Greystone series.

Thank you for your help with hitting these goals.

Also, if you would like a free copy of the next Greystone book, A Circle of Shadows, to review ahead of the release in September please shoot me an email at lou@loupaduano.com.

Adding Book Marketing to the Equation

January 12, 2017 By Lou

I love to write. You might not know this about me. (I keep it to myself most of the time.) But I freaking love writing. When it comes to putting together a story or scripting a scene, I am all about it. When book marketing comes into play?

I usually run for the hills.

Book marketing and writing is not a good mix sometimes.

Truth be told, I would rather hide in my basement than try to sell you on my amazingly, fantabulous novel.

Unfortunately, book marketing is a fact of life and it falls solely on an author’s shoulders. Unless you’re James Patterson or Stephen King. (Someday, maybe?)

Creative vs. Analytical – ROUND 1 – Fight!

Both sides have to come to play in order to make this work. As Soriya Greystone tends to say (though without a full understanding like my three year old) “Balance is the key.”

Writing full time doesn’t get the word out about your work so eventually all you’re really doing is talking to yourself. Not the worst thing in the world. (I hear padded cells are cozy after awhile.) You have to ask yourself what’s the point?

On the flip side, book marketing can and will take over your schedule completely. And I mean COMPLETELY. There is always going to be some social network to join or a promotional site to list your work with so it gets more visibility. All well and good but there has to be a limit.

Pros to adding book marketing to your schedule.

  1. Book marketing can create an incredible amount of excitement. Putting your work out there in front of other people is terrifying. It scares the holy hell out of me every single day. Talking it up, however, is a great way to build excitement not only for potential readers but for yourself. Delving into the background of a story helps recall why it mattered to you in the first place and why it deserves to be read by others.
  2. A motivating force. Promoting a book tends to come with its own deadline. You’ve talked about a project so it better damn well see the light of day at some point. Knowing there is expectation out there, even if it is just your mother, is the creative drive you need to complete the work.

Cons, the other side of the coin.

  1. Book marketing can stifle the creative process. Worrying about the sales of your last book can hamper your drive to finish (or even start) your next one. Stop refreshing the sales report on KDP (Guilty…) and start writing!
  2. Making story decisions based on the dreaded “what sells” mentality. When creative influences become mired in ongoing trends in the hopes of writing the next bestseller, the project in question tends to end up less than fulfilling on any creative level. Making the almighty dollar, while a wonderful goal that even I hope to attain one fine day, means nothing if what we create is passionless.

Ways to mix book marketing and the writing side of things.

  1. Keep them separate. Write during the week and market on the weekend. Or vice versa. Let your brain stay in creative overdrive during a draft and then focus on boosting sales numbers on older projects. You’re still focused on all aspects of your business (it is a business after all) but not at the expense of future product.
  2. Batch ahead of schedule. Book promos weeks or months in advance. Schedule the hell out of your time. Whatever it takes to keep your mind on the task at hand so you can be as creative as possible and deliver your readers another excellent book to enjoy.

All in all mixing book marketing with your creative endeavors is the ultimate juggling game. Learn it and learn to love it.

Thanks for reading.
