Writing Update – September 29, 2020

September 29, 2020 By Lou

Welcome to the writing update for this month! It’s been two months since the last one. I can hardly believe how fast this year is flying by, yet feels like it’s lasted a decade…

Writing Update

For the last month I’ve been picking at a new series bible I’ve been putting together. This was a lesson I had to learn over the course of the Greystone series and the DSA Season One. With the amount of details, the cast of characters involved, and so many plotlines involved the bible has absolutely been crucial to making to sure the series stays consistent throughout.

My plan is to build a bible for each series going forward, plotting out each and every book in the series before Book One launches.

So right now, I am three books into a new series. They are outlined and the world building is set for the fourth. I’m loving it. Building story is my favorite thing in the world. It is also the least time consuming part of the process, if you can believe that.

Am I going to spill the beans on the new series? Not yet.

The Sad Truth

I’d love to tell you my next book is set for release. 2020, unfortunately, has not been kind to my writing schedule. 2021 will no doubt hold the fewest releases from me since 2016.

Why, you ask?

I’m playing teacher dad for my kiddos three days per week. It’s a learning curve, for me especially, and I’m focusing most of my energy to giving them the education they deserve.

So I’m dedicated to not drafting a book until I can put all my efforts into the task. I will continue to outline (I’ve outlined 10 books this year so far…) and to script new projects, but drafts will have to wait until the schedule clears.

That’s just the reality of the situation. I’ve tried to keep going, to push through, but it isn’t sustainable and rather than push out a subpar novel I want you to have the best experience possible with the books.

More Greystone and DSA is coming, I promise you this. Greystone is completely outlined. DSA Season Two is scripted and the first book is drafted. These are coming, as well as a whole lot more.

Army in the Obelisk

As for Army in the Obelisk? It’s pretty much set. But I want to wait until the second half of Greystone is closer to a realization. It makes sense for a better reading experience. When we get closer to that point, you will be the first to know.

I hope that makes sense. Part of me feels like this is a huge letdown, but really, it’s for the best. For you as a reader and for me as a writer. This year has been insane. Hopefully we can get back to normal sooner rather than later.

What comes next? Hints for the future of The DSA…

April 21, 2020 By Lou

The first season is now available. Six books that are really only the beginning of the story of this motley crew of agents trying to save the future.

Since social distancing has been extended, so has the Season One Sale!

Hints at what comes next…

For those who don’t know me that well, Babylon 5 is my favorite television show of all time. J.M. Straczynski crafted a very specific narrative with the show. He developed a five-season arc, the first of its kind. We now see season-long storylines and even some longer form television shows, but he did it first and it was brilliant.

The DSA is designed in a similar manner. The current plan is five seasons with six books each season. After all is said and done, you will have a tapestry that lines up from the very first chapter of The Clearing all the way to the series finale.

A lofty goal, I know. That’s why it took me as long as it did to launch. That’s why there is a gap between seasons.

But what comes next? Season Two clues…

Season Two is the organic progression of the narrative. New questions arise and the clues to the major threat at the heart of the series comes to light.

Three new characters join our cast. Well, two completely new and one that receives a more prominent role with the team.

Ben faces his fate… (be sure to read Broken Loyalties to see what I mean)

The secret history of Susan Metcalf is revealed.

The second sign reaches terminal point.

The Trust is everywhere.

The Witness’ real name and the mission that “killed” him.

The search for Emily Wright reaches its end with startling results.

All this and more is coming.

Everything has a purpose. Everything is planned. That is part of the message with the DSA and part of the joy of writing this journey.

Season Two is more action-packed. There is more character drama and more revelations in each book. It’s going to be a wild ride.

Did you enjoy Season One?

Shoot me an email at lou@loupaduano.com. I’d love to hear from you.

Happy reading.

Dark Impulses Preview

Chapter One

The dripping sound woke her. The small pitter-patter falling along the soaked carpet at her feet sent wave after wave of dizzying echoes into her unconscious thoughts until she was snapped awake. Her first thought landed on the sink: a poorly maintained bathroom basin in a two-star motel on a dead-end road. Of course it was the sink. It wasn’t until Morgan Dunleavy licked her lips that she realized it wasn’t water running from the sink, but blood dripping down her face.

“Where?” she asked to the shadows of the room. The small stream ran from the top of her head, down her nose, and over her lips. She spat as the question left her, which interrupted the steady dripping.

From behind her, light split the dark beige curtains of the motel room. The bed lay upended along the far wall. It matched the state of the rest of the furniture in the cramped space. Morgan fought to breathe, the blood trickling into her mouth and over her tongue. Her eyes struggled to adjust to the moonlight which faded behind the fast moving clouds in the winter sky.

“Zac?” she called out. Her head pounded. Everything hurt. Everything screamed to be noticed and mended. She searched for her medical kit. Her mother had given it to her after Morgan graduated. She always carried it with her. The small bag rested out of sight; it was lost in the darkness, just like everything else.

“No,” a voice growled in response. Two small pebbles of light flickered from the far side of the room. A tapping returned to the background, this time that of a heavy-soled sneaker—red and white with blue laces. Morgan’s eyes widened. They attempted to refocus despite the swelling along her temples. “Your boy toy isn’t here, Morgan.”

Her mind snapped to attention, and the cloud over her thoughts was gone the second his words cracked the darkness. She reached to wipe away the blood and remove the matted strands of dark hair from her face. Her hands refused to obey her. She pulled again, and the force caused her to cry out. Tied hands strained against the chair beneath her.

“Oh, hell.”

The tapping ended and the figure in the shadows stood. His chair flew across the room. It joined the table, the nightstand, and the bed in a crumpled heap. His eyes remained wide lights, and deep red ran along the edges of his pupils. His jaw was clenched, which kept his voice throaty and guttural. She recognized him anyway by the gun in his hand—the same Ruger he always carried.

“Ben,” she muttered as her partner stepped into view.

“You betrayed me!” Ben Riley’s empty hand rubbed at his neck. The other shook with fury, yet his sidearm remained locked on his captive. Morgan tried to lift her hands, to talk to her partner calmly and casually. Zip ties clacked against the wooden frame of the chair. She recalled the struggle from earlier. She remembered the argument that started it, and the blood that followed.

Her blood. She bit back the panic creeping into her chest. “This isn’t…” Ben shook his head as soon as she opened her mouth. She spoke louder. “Ben. You need to listen to me.”

“To your lies?” Spit flew across the air between them. “After what you’ve done to me?”

“I haven’t—”

The gun silenced her, now only inches in front of her face. “You stole my life,” Ben cried. His eyes were a deep, dark red that matched his flushed cheeks. Goosebumps ran up his arms, and both were shaking, matching his uncontrolled anger. “You and Metcalf and the rest. You took everything from me! Do you know how that feels? Of course you don’t.”

He was wrong. She understood what it was like to lose a life you worked so hard to create. The DSA was built for people like them. A second and final chance.

“Ben,” she whispered. “Please…”

The gun cocked loudly. Cold eyes answered her plea. “But you will, Morgan. You will.”

The flare of the muzzle was the last thing Morgan saw. Then the world went dark.

Writing Update – February 25, 2020

February 25, 2020 By Lou

Don’t mind the dust over here. I’ve been away for a week and am just now starting to pull myself back together. Let’s get on with the writing update, shall we?!

Writing Update

Greystone

This week I am starting the draft for The Final Gauntlet. It is the last book in the Greystone-in-Training trilogy and one that sets the stage for everything to follow in the main series. There is a little bit of pressure to make sure it does everything I want it to, but the pieces are coming together nicely. Any chance I get to spend in Portents is always like coming home.

Greystone Serial

This last month I’ve been developing a new Greystone adventure set between the stories in Tales from Portents. When I conceive a new project, I try to find some new challenge, something to sink my creative teeth into so I can test my craft or push myself in new ways. This serial is a perfect example of that. I so want to share more, but I’ll wait until next month as the details come to light.

I will say it is the most pure Soriya/Loren story since Signs of Portents. I really wanted to return to those roots and explore their dynamic as I did during those early adventures. Finding some quirky monsters to tie into it was just a bonus.

DSA Season One

Dark Impulses is now available in paperback! This was the book that sold me on the Morgan/Ben dynamic. It solidifies them as the core of the series and I love every moment with them.

You can order your signed paperback now.

DSA Season Two

The first book of Season Two is with some alpha readers. I’m anxious for their feedback. This book closes out the threads of the first season, while setting the stage for the next. My plan is to draft the second book after The Final Gauntlet, but we’ll see what happens.

Season Two is a much different animal in a lot of ways. There is a tighter narrative connecting the six books. There is definitely more answers and insights along the way as well. I think it’s much stronger and shows the potential offered by the format. I’m looking forward to sharing more in the coming months.

Reading

Last week’s road trip with family and friends afforded me some much needed reading time. I might actually complete one of my seasonal reading lists for a change!

Artemis by Andy Weir

The Martian is one of my favorite books of all time. I loved the narrative and the narration offered by Weir. Most of those qualities carried over to Artemis. It’s a much different novel, about a city on the moon, but the storytelling was phenomenal. Sure, there were moments where the science went right over my head – I’m not that smart – but Weir immediately brings it down to a human level. I can’t recommend Weir enough. Check it out.

Stone of Fire by J.F. Penn

Joanna Penn’s ARKANE series has been on my reading pile for years. It hits all my sweet spots as a reader. Indiana Jones meets The X-Files as the ARKANE group tracks down powerful religious artifacts. What’s not to love?

I thought this opening installment did a nice job of introducing the agency and the main players. I wasn’t sold on the inclusion of the evil syndicate, Thanatos. I would have preferred the main thrust of the action to be focused on the villainous Everett. Thanatos seemed more thrown in to foreshadow future books than to play a role in this one.

I’m still excited to read the next one. I think Morgan Sierra is the perfect lead for this series and am looking forward to seeing her story progress.

Spectral Advocate is available for pre-order

January 14, 2020 By Lou

Book Four of the DSA’s opening season is now available for pre-order. This is only for the digital copy at the moment, but paperback fans should keep an eye out as they should be available in the next few days!

Ready for the second half of season one?

The Bridge left things with an air of uncertainty. Lincoln’s troubles were only the beginning. Things really start to turn here, in Spectral Advocate.

From the back cover:

Abigail Winslow, the DSA’s latest recruit, is dead.

Unsure of who to trust anymore after learning the truth behind Agent Jacob Grissom’s death, Ben Riley attempts to track down Winslow’s killer without the use of the agency’s resources.  Facing a locked room murder, Ben turns to his only suspect for assistance—Cal Cooper, an attorney with a secret.

He sees ghosts—everywhere.

Thrust into a world he refuses to believe in, Ben must evade the danger posed by those beyond the veil and put his faith in a stranger to discover the murderer in their midst.

Unfortunately, Ben’s line of inquiry may have made him the next target.

Meet Cal Cooper

He might be my favorite character in the series. Cal has a pretty important role in this novel, but there is so much more to his story than what fit within the narrative. I hope readers connect with him and want to see where things go next for him.

This is the first book in the series with what I call spin-off potential. I know exactly what a Cal Cooper series would look like, down to the last detail. The only way I will write it, though, is if there is enough reader interest. Please be sure to reach out to me at lou@loupaduano.com if you want more Spectral Advocate down the line.

Answers to come…

The next three DSA novels are coming fast and furious. With them are some of the answers you’ve been seeking. Why was Ben recruited to the DSA? What is the Wellspring? And what is Sullivan’s ultimate plan?

These are only a few of the items addressed within these pages, while also setting up more mysteries in the second season.

I hope you enjoy the ride.
