Writing Update – September 24, 2019

September 24, 2019 By Lou

Another month has somehow slipped by! So much going on so let’s get to the writing update.

Writing Update

The DSA Season One

The first three books are live on retail sites. There is even a series page on Amazon. So cool.

The first two books have been submitted for proofs. I just received my copy of The Clearing and it looks fantastic. Love the job KDP did with the printing. It should be finalized tomorrow and on sale by the end of the week!

On the edit front, I finished up a massive overhaul of Book 5 last week. Tomorrow I start in on Book 6.

Hammer and Anvil

Last Saturday was a very busy day. Instead of enjoying the 80-degree weather, I did a final readthrough of the newest Greystone book. I think it might be my favorite novel yet. I really like the way the story came together.

It’s been submitted for a paperback proof and should be here Thursday! Expect to see it live on Amazon next week!

Gifts of Kali

I marked it on my calendar. Next week, I start the draft for Greystone-in-Training Book 2. I haven’t been sleeping well of late and I think it might because this one has been screaming for release.

Local Appearance Schedule

I’ve been reaching out to venues to spread the word about the releases coming out.

October 12th – Central Library in downtown Buffalo is hosting Indie Author Day. I’ll be there signing books and promoting both The Clearing as well as Hammer and Anvil. It runs from 11am to 2pm.

October 19th – Buffalo Comicon is back! Queen City Bookstore is hosting another fantastic show at the Buffalo Marriott. Tons of guests and free comics. It starts at 10am and goes until 5pm. I might even have copies of Promethean ready for some lucky readers. Order your ticket now!

November 2nd – The Buffalo Book Club Expo. There is a fantastic local author network building in Buffalo. A group of 15 of some of Buffalo’s most talented are coming together to promote their work at the Expo Market. Stay tuned for more details as I get them.

I’d love to see you at these shows. Be sure to stop and say hello!

October is going to be a huge month. A ton of promotions coming up. Keep an eye here and on social media for more updates.

Happy Reading!

Writing Update – August 27, 2019

August 27, 2019 By Lou

Well, there goes another summer. How does this keep happening? Oh yeah, the writing thing…

Writing Update

DSA Season One

Final edits are progressing nicely on the series. I’ve certainly learned quite a bit about my weaknesses as a writer and where I need to focus going forward. That was what drew me to JD Book Services in the first place. I’ve always recognized that my prose hasn’t been as strong as it should have been. This has been the kick in the ass I’ve needed to figure out why I’ve felt that way and how to correct the problems for future drafts.

The Clearing is heading back for proofreading right now. Once that’s all set I can finalize the page count and start getting some proofs made! I wrote the first draft of this book back in 2015. It’s been such a journey, I honestly worried I would never reach the end.

Promethean and The Bridge are my focus this week. Tweaking sentence structure and clarifying certain points takes an incredible amount of time–and patience–so hopefully I won’t completely screw them up in the process.

Greystone-In-Training

This month, I took time out of editing to write the script for book two in the trilogy. The Gifts of Kali might be my favorite script yet. It has some fantastic character moments for Soriya and Mentor.

I’m looking forward to sitting down to draft the book as soon as final edits are completed on DSA.

The Lost Outpost

Remember this one? Probably not. I wrote the draft for NaNoWriMo back in 2017. Well, lately I’ve been diving into the text to see where I can flesh out the narrative. Massive edits are coming this fall for this bad boy. It’s a sci-fi horror piece I’ve had in my head since 2007. Really hoping I can make it work the way I always intended.

We’ll see.

Pre-Orders!

The Clearing is coming your way October 9th. Pre-order your copy here!

Hammer and Anvil launches October 24th. You can pre-order your copy here!

Greystone: The Complete First Cycle is on sale now!

August 15, 2019 By Lou

Today is the day! Greystone: The Complete First Cycle box set is available now!

The first five books in one massive volume!

Pray for the light. Prepare for the darkness…

Follow Soriya Greystone and Detective Greg Loren as they tackle myths, legends and monsters in the city of Portents.

What threat hides in the shadows? And are either of them truly prepared for the secrets that come to light?

Mythologies collide as the monsters of the past threaten to overtake the city of Portents. Can Soriya and Loren stand against the growing darkness or will fate require the ultimate sacrifice?

Set contains:

Book One – Signs of Portents
Book Two – Tales from Portents
Book Three – The Medusa Coin
Book Four – Pathways in the Dark
Book Five – A Circle of Shadows

Special Bonus! This set also includes a sneak peek at the first book in the Greystone-In-Training prequel trilogy, Hammer and Anvil, out this October!

Special Launch Offer

5 Books. A sneak peek at Hammer and Anvil. All for $0.99.

How can you say no to that?

This deal ends September 1st. After that the price for the box set will be $9.99. (Still a pretty great deal…)

Some news about Greystone

Hammer and Anvil was meant to appease my need to return to Portents. Just a taste of Soriya’s world to pass the time between installments of DSA or the other hundred projects I’m supposed to be working on.

I couldn’t stop.

The script for Book 2 of the Greystone-In-Training trilogy is DONE!

It’s called The Gifts of Kali. And, boy, is it a gamechanger.

Not only will you learn where the ribbon of Kali came from and how it came to be in Soriya’s possession but there are hints in this story of what is to come in the main series. I can’t get enough of Soriya, Loren and the rest of the cast.

I hope you feel the same.

The Gifts of Kali is something you’ll be hearing more about over the next few months. It comes out July 2020.

Join the Launch Team Today

July 9, 2019 By Lou

Want a free copy of my upcoming releases? Join the launch team today!

Explain this launch team thing to me…

It all comes down to reviews. No matter what anyone tells you, they are the gold standard for social promotion. There is nothing better than a reader’s opinion of your book to show the world that they should take a chance on your product. I can scream from the mountains that Greystone is a phenomenal series but I might be slightly biased…

Might be.

So, in exchange for a free copy of my book all I ask in return is an honest review on Amazon, Goodreads, and everywhere else you feel comfortable leaving one the week the book is released. Easy peasy.

What does a review entail?

A sentence or two at their most basic. Overall impression and whether or not you think others will enjoy the story told. You can go further into the plot, the craft behind the work, but that’s completely up to you.

The schedule this year.

It’s a little crazy, to be honest. I try to give a month or two of lead time for reading and preparing for the launch. The schedule is a little tighter than I prefer for this year but I’ll do everything I can to make it work for you.

DSA Season One, Book One – The Clearing launches in early October. Advance reader copies will be available starting September 8th.

Greystone-In-Training Book One – Hammer and Anvil also launches in October but will be near the end of the month. ARC’s will be sent out starting September 23rd.

DSA Season One, Book Two – Promethean launches mid-November. Advance reader copies will be available starting October 1st.

From there things get a little nebulous in terms of details. Faster readers can continue with the DSA series right through Book 6 (releases in April 2020).

If you’re excited about the new projects and ready to read, there’s no better way than through the launch team. It’s a good community and always a treat to hear the reactions from readers.

Catering to Old Fans or Reaching New Readers?

July 2, 2019 By Lou

There comes a time during the writing process where you have to take a step back and figure out exactly who your target audience is for this story. Every writer does it. Everyone pulls apart their book, script, short story, etc. and tries to determine who in their right mind will be reading this.

Over the last few years, I’ve come to love my Greystone readers. They are a stalwart bunch and they keep me inspired to continue with the series. When it came to closing out Hammer and Anvil, though, I suddenly hit a roadblock because of those readers.

Hammer and Anvil is meant to be the first in a new trilogy of stories. One that uses pre-existing information/lore to rebuild its world for a new audience. So who is it meant for exactly? Is it meant to cater to the old guard with nods to stories that take place later in the timeline? Or is it for new readers as it is the first book in a series?

And so the debate begins!

new readersI put it off as long as I could. It wasn’t until I was about halfway through the draft that I hit upon the heavy exposition chapters of the book. That’s pretty standard for me. Always taking the easier path to feel my way into a story. Action pieces. Dialogue chapters. Easy stuff.

But with the exposition came the realization that I needed to find an answer and quick. Soriya’s first appearance in the story is in chapter 2. The Greystone puts in an appearance as well. But new readers don’t know anything about them, do they? They don’t know what the stone is or how it works or even who this woman is who is wielding it. They would be lost without some information.

Old readers already hold that knowledge. Exposition at this point would be boring to them, having read through possibly 5 adventures with Soriya already.

So who wins here? Does one fanbase trump the other?

I started having this back and forth during the drafting phase and then again through the editing process.

Changes made to reach new readers

Exposition won out. There are nice touchstones from the other books in terms of setting up certain environments, but the desire for new readers to be able to dive into this novel was more important in the long run.

I went back and punched up the background for each player introduced. I tried to read things with fresh eyes and really build everyone’s role as well as the city itself. The story has definitely grown in the telling and I think it is stronger because of it.

This is not to say old fans will be bored. I’ve hit a number of different moments that connect readers to stories from the main series. Loren’s cigarette addiction. His sleeping on the couch. The Franklin Center. A Circle of Shadows. And more. Plenty of nods for readers to recognize while not confusing newbies in the process.

New challenges with each new project

It’s amazing to think about. When I set out to write Hammer and Anvil it was meant to be for newsletter subscribers. When it grew, so did my expectations for the final product. That included making a cohesive narrative, it meant finding a bridge from the first book to the third, and it came with the new challenge of finding new readers while also capturing the zeal of the ones who have stood by the series from the start.

Not an easy task. But one I’ve been excited in exploring over the last few weeks.

I think you’re in for a fun ride no matter how much experience you have with Greystone.

Thanks for reading.

Writing Update – June 18, 2019

June 18, 2019 By Lou

This was a strange place for the writing update to fall but who am I to argue with the boss who puts this schedule together? It’s been a crazy week of e-mails, formatting, clean up, going through old notes, marketing, ad copy and more insanity.

I’m an absolute scatterbrain so it can only mean one thing: I finished a book!

Writing Update

Hammer and Anvil

The draft is DONE! I’ve been reading through the book over the last few days before I dig in on the edits. I typically hate this part of the process and while, yes, I have been screaming at my lack of vocabulary, this one is in pretty good shape.

My plan is to tear it apart and piece each section back together until I’m happy with it. Hopefully before the end of the July 4th holiday so I can pass it along to some alpha readers for approval.

DSA Season One

Some good feedback has already come my way. Looking forward to going through everyone’s notes as soon as I finish up on Hammer and Anvil.

Then it’s time for one last readthrough before passing it off to the editor. Can’t believe how quick time is flying now.

Cover reveal for the first book is next week!

Greystone: The Complete First Cycle

The box set is available for pre-order right now and will be on sale officially on August 15th!

All five books in the Greystone series contained in one massive volume. Over 1,500 pages of Soriya/Loren goodness. From the grisly murders of Signs of Portents to the cataclysmic finale in A Circle of Shadows, every monster, myth and legend is here for you!

For only $0.99! It’s crazy, I know, but I want people to snag it while they can for such a steal. I want people to love the characters as much as I have over the course of these five books.

Very exciting to see this one come together after years of work.
