A Circle of Shadows Commentary Intro

November 1, 2018 By Lou

If you’ve been around the blog for the last two years you know I absolutely love writing author commentary on my books. I love sharing the stories behind the writing, the little nuances that shift from the outlining phase to the outright changes in the editing phase.

Author Commentary rules

I spoil things. I do. It isn’t because I want to ruin the reading experience. My goal is for these commentaries to be here after you finish the novel. If you want that information ahead of time, that’s your call.

When putting these together I’ve tried to make sure I start with the opening of the novel and not jump right into anything too major plot-wise. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

author commentary

What do you want to know?

Anything and everything is on the table when it comes to the commentary. Want to know why certain choices were made? You have to LET ME KNOW! This commentary runs through the end of the year, with a couple breaks along the way, so shoot me an email at lou@loupaduano.com and I’ll be glad to make it work into the schedule.

I love reader feedback. I want to know the questions you have. More than anything, I want to share my process behind building these novels. Especially A Circle of Shadows, as writing conclusions is so satisfying from my point of view.

Where are we heading?

Well, A Circle of Shadows concludes the Greystone Saga’s opening arc. It brings a ton of pieces together and opens the door down the line for other questions to be answered. I won’t spoil what comes next but I will be making connections to earlier installments to see the natural progression of the story.

If at any point you want to know more about a topic, how I broke down a specific moment or chapter, reach out. One of the main reasons I enjoy writing these commentary blogs is that I find them informative on a technique level. I learn so much about my own process along the way. I hope you feel the same by reading these.

Next time…

We start with the prologues in A Circle of Shadows and the difficulties in settling on them for this novel.

Thanks for reading.

Finding Your Voice as an Author

October 29, 2018 By Lou

We all know what a Stephen King book sounds like. As readers, we know what to expect when we crack open a Dan Brown tale or even a yarn by Brad Meltzer. Each has a certain voice, a specific tone set from years of practice.

Finding your voice as an author is a journey much like producing a book. It is something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit lately as I dip into new endeavors and new genres.

Rules and regulations

There is something to this, for sure. Rules are important when learning the ins and outs of a genre. Reaching a target audience requires a bit of tweaking one’s voice in order to better suit that audience.

Everyone starts out that way. But dipping more to your strengths, even the discovering of those strengths, is part of finding your own voice.

Who you want to be as an author

This has been weighing on me. When I look back, how do I want to be remembered as an author? Entertaining? Sure. Poignant? Probably not so much.

It goes back to the writing. Theme and tone, each plays a part in determining our voice – that which is projected out to the reader in the form of a final book, polished series, whatever you’re writing.

Greystone, for me, is about opening closed doors. It’s about finding light in the shadows.

What I’ve come to realize is how much some notions carry through even to a completely different series. DSA has been taking over my mind the last few months and will be owning my life for the next three or four months as I close out the opening season of tales.

That theme of discovery returns here. The concept of control over our lives – something Henry Erikson introduced to Portents in The Medusa Coin – is very prominent. Is this a matter of not being creative enough to come up with something new or is this where voice is the most prominent? In the type of message being conveyed to the reader?

The conversation is fascinating to me.

What about in the writing itself?

That is, of course, a major proponent of an author’s voice. Sarcasm, flowing descriptions, snippy dialogue. Again, each plays a role in determining a piece of what you’re trying to impress upon the reader.

But it is in the sum of all parts that the voice comes together. More than the finished product, this journey is incredible and I’m loving each connection I find when I put down my pen to start editing.

The notions inherent in my thoughts, the concepts that creep up in the background are more than similarities, they are important nuances to how I view the world. Something I wasn’t cognizant of previously.

Like Greystone, I am also trying to open new doors. To discover more about myself through my writing. To push and pull each scene for more, to say more, to be more in each sentence.

All with the hope of discovering more about who I am, who I want to be, and that voice I want to share with you.

Thanks for reading.

Personal Reflections on Greystone

October 1, 2018 By Lou

I had this idea in 2007. A buddy-cop dramedy about a stay-at-home mom and a detective tracking down myths and legends. Soriya carried the Greystone, a weapon she knew nothing about – one that came to be the center of the story. Loren was there as well, his story nowhere near as fleshed out.

Eleven years later and look where we are.

Five Greystone novels into the saga of these two characters that have changed so completely from those early days.

Reflections on the series

It wasn’t until 2016 that I figured out the story. Okay, that’s not entirely accurate. I wrote the original version of The Medusa Coin in 2012 so there was some indication where Greystone could go…

I didn’t see the potential of the arc until I wrote Tales from Portents. When I realized these smaller stories could carry the narrative and open the possibilities for these characters, that was the turning point for me. Suddenly the map became clear for the entire arc. Three novels, two short story collections, each offering pieces of the puzzle until the conclusion.

Setting the deadlines for each book was pretty key to making the idea work. If I had limited myself to one book per year, I don’t think I would have had the drive to push through my own fears to make Greystone a reality.

Fun deviations

I tried to change the ending of The Medusa Coin several times. I was so angry that I spent an inordinate amount of energy building up the Loren/Soriya relationship only to tear it down in what was considered the second book at the time.

There was a version where they were secretly pretending to drift apart to draw out the threat. There was another where Soriya was doing it to protect Loren and he saw through it, grateful to have a friend like her.

They were messy and complicated, never quite fitting where the story was meant to go.

Each book was a challenge, from conception to execution. Each one caused me to sweat and bleed to pull the narrative together. Yet, A Circle of Shadows only took 16 days to write. I’ve never written anything so quickly and NEVER felt a first draft was as strong.

If only things went that smoothly for every project…

Regrets?

There are a few. Greystone was meant to be more metaphysical in nature; the concept of the Bypass as a corridor to infinity, a vital component of each adventure. The idea of Mentor and Soriya choosing their names/titles as positions of power was supposed to more prominent.

I wavered on it mostly because I knew my audience wasn’t ready for it. Having a character named Mentor alone drove a few readers away in the first novel.

I think Signs of Portents, as a whole, could use a new edit. A tighter, leaner version to fall in line with where the narrative turns by The Medusa Coin. Again, I have Tales from Portents to thank for that change in style. The restrictive nature of short stories really forced me to tune in on each moment, utilize each chapter to its fullest. Some might feel the short story collections aren’t as pertinent to the overall design of the series but to me they strengthened me as an author more than anything I’ve ever written.

Speaking of Tales from Portents… I had this notion of putting Resurrectionists first in the collection. It was to showcase Soriya and Loren first. It was to make sure previewers on retail sites didn’t get a full story and more, before hitting the purchase button.

It shouldn’t have happened. I wish I put the story in the proper order so it flowed perfectly timeline-wise.

The Journey Continues…

Two and a half years. I picked up the draft of Signs of Portents in March 2016 and set to work on completing this saga from start to finish.

I made it to the halfway point.

Yes, A Circle of Shadows closes out Loren’s story. It, however, fails to answer some of the most important questions of the series. No, I won’t spill the beans on what is to come but if you look closely enough you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Portents will always be part of me. It is in everything I write, everything I imagine, and it creeps to the surface every time I talk about the books.

I can’t wait to visit again soon.

A Circle of Shadows – Pre-Order the Final Chapter Now!

August 27, 2018 By Lou

We’re only two weeks away from the release of the final chapter of the Greystone series! Everything has built to this moment. From the opening of Signs of Portents when Beth fell there has been a larger story tucked in the background of each installment.

It’s been an absolute pleasure to build this story, brick by brick, and I can’t wait for you to see what happens to your favorite characters.

You can pre-order your copy now on Amazon.

Looking for a paperback?

You are in luck. The paperback is available NOW! Order your copy today!

Final chapter? I thought there was more coming?

There is. I promise you that. I know exactly what the second half of the series will be when I finally sit down to write it. More myths and some incredible discoveries, all centered on the purpose of the stone and what role in plays for the future of Portents and the world.

There are hints in Pathways in the Dark as to what I’m talking about, so be sure to check it out.

But for now, this will be the final chapter. It closes out a big chunk of Loren’s story and puts the characters in a nice place to walk away for a bit. My hope is to get back to this world as soon as possible. I’m fighting the urge right now, in fact, I love working in Portents so much. For now, however, I hope to build some new worlds and look forward to sharing new mysteries with you.

Writing Update – August 23, 2018

August 23, 2018 By Lou

Welcome, welcome! Let’s get to the writing update, shall we?

Greystone

Lots of cool things going on with the Greystone Saga right now. A Circle of Shadows drops on September 11th for all you digital readers out there. Interested in a paperback of the climactic finale to the series?

You can order one NOW!

The Medusa Coin Sale! – The third novel of the series is currently only $0.99! Interested in seeing where Samantha Myers comes into play? Want to know what divided Soriya and Loren to the breaking point? Look no further than this incredible tale of immortality and sacrifice.

Sale ends August 28th, just in time for…

Pathways in the Dark Sale! – That’s right. The road to A Circle of Shadows is becoming clear for you, isn’t it? Starting August 29th and running through September 4th, Pathways in the Dark will only be $0.99 digitally!

Know the whole story before grabbing the finale on September 11th. From the final tear in Soriya and Loren’s partnership to the secrets behind Samantha Myers’ arrival in Portents and more. Every story, every character explored is important to where the story is going.

The D.S.A.

From now until the end of the month I am putting the finishing touches on Book Three of the first season, with a novel called The Bridge. I really like how much of the original version held up and can’t wait for you to see where the series is headed. This installment is the crux for the season in my opinion.

A smaller story in scope, The Bridge allows the reader to step back from the main plot and explore the pasts of each of these characters.

My main focus has been to ramp up the action in a few spots and keep the story consistent with the previous two books already completed.

Season Two – Yeah, I know. Season one isn’t due for another year. Yet here I am, unable to turn off my brain. I outlined the first book of season two this week and even have the first five chapters of book two outlined and ready for dialogue.

Why am I jumping the gun when I know I should be focused on the current project? Mostly it’s about finding answers to questions raised in season one. Having those in my back pocket, including a character who turns from foe to friend, means I can go back and seed those shifts, those slight details and make the whole reading experience all the better. (I hope…)

I intended to spend the autumn working on a separate project before returning to the back half of season one but right now I’m having such a blast I might just keep going.

Writing Update – July 23, 2018

July 23, 2018 By Lou

So much going on this month, folks! Let’s get this writing update going!

Writing!

A Circle of Shadows

The proof is in. First copies have been sent to my advance readers. Some feedback has already been trickling in and I’m loving what I’ve been hearing. Lots of praise for where the story goes, quite a few screams as well, but people seem to enjoy the book.

Can’t ask for more than that!

Oh, except that if you should pre-order your copy today!

As people have mentioned certain aspects of the novel, I’ve realized how much A Circle of Shadows changed during the drafting. This is going to make a great author commentary so be sure to grab your copy and read it as soon as you can!

Promethean

Book Two of the DSA is finally coming together. I’ve buckled down this week to finish my first massive pass on the draft. Hoping to have this off my plate by the end of the month.

I’m so happy to have made some real progress on this one. It’s been an editing struggle. Lots learned during the process, some lessons repeated multiple times, in order to refine the narrative and make sense of each character’s role.

Really excited to keep plugging away at the DSA series. It has all my favorite aspects of a conspiracy thriller, heavy in the science-fiction vein.

Ancient Weapons

I put together the script for what will be Book One in a series called Red Epsilon. This one is pure space opera. We’re talking starships and space battles. Aliens and cool weapons. Snarky banter and heartfelt characters.

This one holds a special place in my heart and I’m really working to keep each book in the series standalone. That is a new challenge for me. (DSA goes the opposite way and everything is very interconnected and runs together for a full narrative.)

I think it is the strongest script I’ve put together in a long time and I can’t wait to sit down to start the draft this fall.

Superman

Say what? You’re writing Superman now?

I wish!

I am working on a spec script for the character (in my “spare” time). The idea is to keep my hand in the comic world. To do so, I realized I should be putting more time on crafting comic book scripts in order to better grasp the genre.

Why Superman?

I recently read Man of Steel #2 by Brian Michael Bendis. I won’t give away the whole plot of the issue but there was a sequence early in the book concerning the Toyman. Great villain. Great pathos.

He is in Coast City, rampaging in some giant Kaiju monster. Just destroying the city for no justifiable reason. His motivations completely unknown, the impetus behind his appearance totally lost. A wasted element from a writer claiming Superman doesn’t have many decent villains…

Suffice it to say, I was not a fan.

It made me realize he missed the point of the character. But what is the point of the Toyman? That’s where I started and put together a basic outline for a single issue story utilizing my favorite elements of Superman.

My plan is to finish the script between projects and share it here on the blog.

Interview!

I recently sat down with L.A. Frederick to discuss my writing. You can check out the interview here. And be sure to pick up a copy of The Rain.

Thanks for reading!
