Collateral Commentary – Using the Greystone

May 10, 2018 By Lou

The Collateral commentary concludes here so SPOILER WARNING is in effect!

A reason for everything…

I go out of my way to make this the one truth behind anything I write. There has to be a reason for everything. It has to make sense, both from a character perspective and a plot perspective.

From clothing to speech pattern it all comes from these two factors.

For example: In one of the early novels, Soriya made a reference to Scooby Doo. I want to say it was The Consultant or possibly another story from Tales from Portents, but it was in there through much of the editing process.

It was funny and matched the scene perfectly.

It was also completely out of character. Does Soriya own a television? Negative. Does she ever make a pop culture reference unless it is to question something Loren says? Nope.

Should she know what the hell Scooby Doo is? Of course. Everyone should know what Scooby Doo is and how eternal those old cartoons are. Would she know about it? No way. No how.

It had to go.

See? Reasons for everything.

Including the Greystone

I expected more crap for this. Every instance of a rune showing up I waited for someone to shoot me an email to lay into me for my lack of imagination. Does Soriya depend on the same four or five runes to defend herself from the menaces she faces?

Yes, she does. Collateral, especially, when Soriya confronts the Phoenix in the alley, she blasts her with the same two runes rather than come up with a new game plan.

Is it just my lack of imagination or inability to research some new tactic? No. Not this time anyway…

The truth behind her lack of diversity, and my reasoning behind it when I put together a scene, is that when it comes to assaults using the Greystone it is always based on her knowledge. It comes from her training with Mentor. He knew a specific way of doing things and that was what he taught her.

She continues to utilize that knowledge to the best of her ability.

Why is this important? Why mention this at all?

Ah, dear reader, you know me too well. There is a reason for everything including this blog. See, Soriya is about to learn more about the Greystone than she ever thought possible in A Circle of Shadows.

You will see more runes, more languages, more signs, and more danger because of them than every before.

The first reason for Soriya’s continued use of the same limited number of runes came from character.

The plot reason comes to play in September’s release of A Circle of Shadows.

A monumental shift is coming this fall to Greystone. Get ready.

So no hate mail about the runes, okay?

Thanks for reading.

Pathways in the Dark Author Commentary Introduction

April 30, 2018 By Lou

This is absolutely my favorite time of the year. If you’re anything like me, you love to listen or read the author commentary on a book, film, DVD collection… anything that brings insight into something you loved. To me, the process behind putting a final product together adds to the enjoyment of the product itself.

Pathways in the Dark Author Commentary Begins!

If you’ve enjoyed the book already feel free to dive in right from the start. If you haven’t, be aware that I will be going in-depth into each and every short story contained within. I won’t deliberately go out of my way to ruin a plot point, especially if it doesn’t pertain to what I am talking about during the blog.

Remember, if there is something you desperately have to know about the making of Pathways in the Dark, be sure to email me at lou@loupaduano.com. I have my general list of items I want to hit for the next few months (yeah, it’s a little long…) so be sure if there is something you really found interesting in the book and want to know how it ended up in the draft LET ME KNOW!! Can’t wait to hear from you.

Why this project?

This is a question I will answer for each and every short story in the collection. However, looking at the book as a whole I think this is important as well. I’m not a fan of short stories. I don’t typically read them, anthologies, or the like. I’ve never felt they carried the same weight or meant as much to a series as a full-length installment.

I was wrong.

Or, at least, I set out to prove that conceit was incorrect.

Pathways in the Dark, like Tales from Portents before it, is vital to the Greystone series and deliberately so. There are so many little tidbits layered into the collection. Pieces of a puzzle yet to even be formed in some cases, that I can’t see the series without this book. The overall narrative fails without the arcs contained in Pathways.

Ruiz’s lesson in Trustfall. Soriya’s new apartment. The backstory of Samantha Myers. Each one was designed to showcase a character and propel them forward, to push them toward A Circle of Shadows while also putting them to the test to explain why they are important to the story, to understand who they are and where they’ve been when the next novel opens.

It is a much different collection than Tales from Portents. One that owes much to that first collection, but one that when all is said and done very much stands on its own as a moment in time for these characters and the choices they have made. The impact of those choices and how they came about.

The price they’ve paid or will pay because of them.

Collateral starts next time!

Feel free to drop me a line and let me know your thoughts and if you would like to hear more about a part of the book or the series at lou@loupaduano.com.

Always happy to hear from you.

Thanks for reading.

Greystone Saga Vol. 2 Box Set Available for Pre-Order!

April 26, 2018 By Lou

The second digital box set of the Greystone series is now available for pre-order! Contained within this massive document are The Medusa Coin, Pathways in the Dark AND an exclusive sneak peek at A Circle of Shadows!!!

CRAZY!

Cover reveal

Kit Foster Designs did another amazing job putting together this cover. Keeping in line with the first box set and focusing solely on the dark streets of Portents was an inspired choice.

I can’t say enough about the man and his work. Every time I get a new cover in my inbox I spend way too long staring at it.

There is a lot of talk about covers being on genre. For me, this cover and every cover for the Greystone series has been about building an image, setting the tone for what is within. That is more important in my mind. It may cost me a sale or two but when people find a Greystone book the very first thing they tell me about is the amazing cover image that drew them in.

I can think of no higher praise for Kit and his work on Greystone over the last two years.

Pre-order the box set today!

The digital box set comes out June 12th but you can pre-order yours NOW! It is being offered for the special launch price of $2.99 before heading up to $4.99 post launch. You’re getting an entire book for FREE at that price!

Help spread the word…

We’re nearing the end of this journey and anything you can do to help spread the word and make this launch as successful as possible is deeply appreciated.

If you’ve read and reviewed The Medusa Coin and Pathways in the Dark be sure to do the same for this new box set. You can rate it now on Goodreads!

Social media posts, reviews, every little bit helps and I thank you for your continued support of the series!

Thanks for reading!

A Call for Reviews

April 19, 2018 By Lou

I’ve set a few goals for myself this year. There are the usual suspects in the mix. Finish a new series of books, edit a couple sitting in the drawer next to my desk. Maybe spend some time with the family. (That would be nice…)

First and foremost on the list is asking for reviews.

Calling all reviewers

I know how difficult it can be to leave a review. You never know what to say, how long it should be, if you’re giving too much away or not saying enough. The fact remains each review is crucial to the success of a book.

I set a goal for Signs of Portents this year at 50 reviews. I would love to see it hit the mark. Right now it is at 27. Totally workable but I need your help to make it happen.

Tales from Portents and Pathways in the Dark are stuck at 9 reviews. It would be incredible if they both reached 20 by the end of the year.

The Medusa Coin had the strongest review count out of the gate thanks to my fantastic advance reader team but since then has had a total of bupkus. It is currently at 16 reviews. Let’s see what we can do to make that 25 by the end of the year.

If you’ve read both Signs of Portents and Tales from Portents consider leaving a review for The Greystone Saga Volume One which contains both books. I would love to be able to promote the box set more but with only 3 reviews it makes it very difficult to manage. If we could get it to 10 reviews it would be a big help.

I can’t do this without you.

One of the main reasons I love to write is that everything is internal. Everything stems from me and when the chips fall the final product is all mine based on my choices and what I wanted to see in the pages.

But the success of such a book is not up to me. It is up to you. Leaving a review is your voice in the process and I take each to heart. Each one is truly appreciated and I can’t say enough about the folks that have been able to leave one for each and every installment of the Greystone series.

Thank you for your help with hitting these goals.

Also, if you would like a free copy of the next Greystone book, A Circle of Shadows, to review ahead of the release in September please shoot me an email at lou@loupaduano.com.

Stockpiling Content

February 22, 2018 By Lou

There are as many different publishing strategies out there as there are stars in the sky. All hold merit. All have benefits and pitfalls. Since closing out my time on Greystone I’ve been toying with a number of ideas on how to proceed. Not just what to write but how to present that content. One thought that crops up more often than not is stockpiling content.

What am I talking about exactly?

The kid in me, that enthusiastic pain in the ass that wants to write his little heart out day in and day out, is completely against this approach. He wants to jump from book to book, hitting the publish button as quickly and as often as possible.

Who wouldn’t want that? There’s a satisfaction in seeing your work out in the world that cannot be replicated in any other task we do as writers.

The problem with that model of production is that there is no lead time. One project ends and the next needs to get going right away to keep the trains moving.

I don’t mind the pressure of content creation. But it fails to take into account the marketing push, the social media aspects of the business. It’s purely creative.

Stockpiling content puts a hold on the publishing side. It’s strategy over quantity. To me, that’s appealing on a number of levels.

Benefits of stockpiling content

Better planning. If you’re working on a new series, this method allows you to take your time on the planning level to outline your narrative. Not just a single book but where everything leads – much like I mentioned during my ramblings on story bibles a few weeks ago.

More planning equals more connections for a fuller reading experience.

Lead time. If Greystone has taught me anything it’s that lead time is crucial. My goal has always been to be a year ahead of schedule when it comes to publishing. Due to some setbacks at the end of last year I’m down to about six months ahead and I can feel it every time I sit down to work. More lead time helps remove the stress, the crunch time of producing quality content.

Faster delivery. Let’s say you’ve written a trilogy. It’s taken a year to get all three parts completed but now they are ready to roll. Instead of offering one per year or even one every six months you can have them ready and waiting for your reader at a much faster pace. This increases interest for your narrative and doesn’t keep an impatient reader from turning to another series and completely forgetting about you.

Pitfalls

Taking too much time between projects. The lull between published works might hurt more than it helps in the long run. This is the point I keep getting stuck on with my post-Greystone projects. How do I stay in the game while also making sure I’m not sabotaging my next series by rushing it into the hands of my readers?

Driving readers away. Blasting out content at a rapid pace might force some readers away as their monthly book budget might not be able to handle the load. A steadier schedule might be more palatable but where is the happy medium?

Where do I stand?

This is the question I’ve been asking the last few weeks as I plan out 2019. (Insane, I know…)

Stockpiling content has a great appeal to me as someone who plans meticulously each step of the way. It puts more focus on the narrative and offers more strategic methods of publishing in the long run. But will readers be patient in the interim?

For another look at this topic, be sure to check out Nick Stephenson’s blog where guest author Peter Bartram discussed launching all three books of his trilogy at once.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Email me at lou@loupaduano.com. Can’t wait to hear from you!

Thanks for reading.

Pathways in the Dark Arrives Next Week!

February 12, 2018 By Lou

We’re only a week out from the release of Pathways in the Dark, book four in the Greystone series. You would think it would be old hat by now but when it gets to crunch time like this I am still a nervous newbie.

And I shouldn’t be. Not for this project.

I loved putting this collection together. It pushed me in different directions. It forced me to question certain notions about Portents and the world created over the first three books.

Mostly though, it challenged me on a story level to make this separate tales connect thematically. To really push the characters with unique challenges and test them before the next big thing comes their way this fall.

What’s included?

Six tales rest at the heart of this collection. Founder’s Day, which is still available for free separate from the rest of the contents, follows Loren and Myers chasing down clues connected to the fallen Church of the Second Coming. A classic whodunit that forces Loren to face his past mistakes and choose a better path.

In Collateral, see Loren and Soriya deal with the fallout of Henry Erikson’s search for immortality from The Medusa Coin and the damage it inflicts on not only the city but their fragile partnership.

Trustfall follows Alejo Ruiz during his leave of absence from the department. Thefts are on the rise near his daughter’s college campus and he is pulled into the case with danger lurking from both friend and foe.

The Apartment is a solo Soriya tale as she works to find her place in Portents. Connecting with the city has to take a backseat as a haunting threatens the lives of two brothers and leads to a greater understanding of what is happening to the Bypass.

Blackmail puts Detective Samantha Myers in the spotlight as more of her ominous past comes to light.

And Connections follows Soriya’s newest friend Gilgamesh, from The Medusa Coin, as he is abducted by the Cult of Anubis. Can Soriya save him in time before he becomes their ultimate sacrifice? Hints at what is to come in the series are brought to light in this tale.

What are people saying about Pathways in the Dark?

“I thought it was awesome.” – Christina (Amazon Reviewer)

“This series gets better and better and better. Very highly recommended must read.” – Steve (Amazon Reviewer)

“Pathways will keep you on the edge of your seat and begging for more.” – TE (Goodreads Reviewer)

Pre-order your copy today!

The ebook is available now for pre-order at the low price of $0.99!! Paperback fans will be able to order their copy starting February 20th!
