Destination: Unknown!

February 1, 2018 By Lou

With the edit to A Circle of Shadows winding down, I’ve found myself in a strange new position. A chance to write something new. A moment to consider a new story, a new series. Endless possibilities usually invites boundless enthusiasm, a swell of creativity and this is no exception to the rule.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been supercharged, jotting down notes like mad on things I never had time to consider previously. Larger scale epics, space operas, serialized fiction.

But what is the right choice? Which of these unknown destinations is the one that will carry me – and by extension, my lovely readers – to the next great book?

Taking a step back.

It’s difficult to do. Finishing Greystone has been like running a marathon. You’re exhausted but so jazzed by the accomplishment you can’t wait for that rush again. That surge in your brain to keep writing, to keep creating new and exciting stories.

I’m trying to fight that urge right now.

Yes, I’m brimming with ideas, concepts to challenge myself and new characters I can’t wait to have a chat with as they tell me their story. If there is one thing Greystone taught me, however, is that planning is key to success.

I went into the world of Portents with a mission. Five books, each of which had a goal in mind even prior to the writing process. It offered me a guide as I went about constructing the narrative in detail.

Some people look at that as cheating, that it takes the creativity out of the journey.

Not me. I thrive on the planning.

Where I went wrong…

I was ready to rush into the next project. I even had it on the schedule for this month to outline and script.

Then I wrote The Last Outpost.

It was a learning experience to say the least. I went into it like a bull in a china shop and it shows in the draft. Instead of following my process I jumped into the script. Instead of answering questions at that point as I typically do, thanks to time constraints I flew through the draft.

Maybe it was because the story was a standalone and didn’t have to set up anything else. Maybe it was because it was another idea that had been hiding out in my brain so long that I thought I knew everything.

Only I didn’t.

Don’t get me wrong, the book was something I wanted to write for years. The story is spot on. Part sci-fi, part horror. Everything I loved about the genres mashed together.

But it was rushed. I won’t deny that. I wanted it written so I went for it.

The draft needs work. A ton of work. The narrative is there, however, and for me that was what I needed in that moment.

But going forward? Yeah, it is time to take a step back.

So what comes next?

I have a plan. It grows more with each day. With each note, with each thought, comes clarity. I’m not rushing this. After the last two years of living and breathing all things Greystone it’s nice to discover new things.

It’s going to be great though. You can count on that.

Come back next week to see how I’m making sure the next series starts off on the right foot.

Thanks for reading.

Saying Goodbye to Old Friends

January 29, 2018 By Lou

In March 2016, I sat down with a plan in mind. The Greystone Saga. Five books telling the sprawling tale of Soriya Greystone and Detective Greg Loren. The mystery of Bethany Loren’s death at the center of it, the pair faced the mysterious threats hidden under the surface of the city of Portents.

This week I put the final touches on book five. For the first time since this crazy journey began, I was able to put the words – The End – on the page. To say goodbye to old friends that have been with my every thought for the last two years is something I never imagined would be possible. Let alone bittersweet.

The Road Taken…

When I first pitched the series (to an audience of me, myself and I) Soriya was a stay-at-home mother who fought crime with her pal, Loren, while the kids were at school.

Portents existed but it held none of the mystery, none of the secrets, it would eventually come to know.

How it grew, how it changed, is the best part of this wonderful process. I don’t have the answers, I don’t know where my sense of direction stopped and the characters took the wheel. I am damn lucky they did, though.

Soriya has been my strength, my guiding light. Loren has been my resolve, my need for answers. Ruiz, my truth and the parent needed to keep the children in line. Without these three watching over me, driving the story forward, Greystone would never have existed.

As edits wind down on A Circle of Shadows, I find their voices quieting. Never leaving, not completely, because I will never be able to leave Portents for long. There is another story to tell, a larger one yet to be explored with questions that have barely been posed let alone answered.

For now, though, it is time to say goodbye to my old friends.

I am incredibly grateful they have allowed me to tell their story for as long as they have and if I never do get back to Portents, I know I’ve told the best story possible because of who they are as characters, because of the challenges they faced.

The lessons learned during the last two years have made me a better writer. They’ve opened the door to new ways of crafting stories. Character over plot. Not being afraid to upend a scene to find a better way. Questioning everything until the answers speak for themselves in the narrative.

Greystone made all of that possible.

The end for now…

Tom DeFalco was the master of ending his stories like this. Nothing truly ends. There are threads that remain, lives that continue even after we close the book.

That is certainly true for Greystone. Loren, Soriya, Ruiz and all the other players that have grown from that initial pitch have more stories to tell.

As I write this, there are no less than four short stories I’ve added to my schedule that take place in Portents. Some flashbacks, others a bridge to where things are headed in the second half of the series.

Like I said, their voices will never truly leave me. I wouldn’t want them to.

For now, there are new stories to tell. A new series to plot. Another to edit. New worlds and new dramas. But none would be possible without Greystone.

Goodbye old friends. See you soon.

End of Year Wrap Up!

December 21, 2017 By Lou

Well, that snuck up on me quickly. The end of the year is here! How does that always happen?

This has been a crazy year all around. Greystone is reaching the end of its first major arc. I’m diving into the final book right now and am so excited with the enormous shift coming from the events within. People will be angry, for sure, some downright insane over what happens next but there is plenty of story left to tell.

That’s what this has all been about for me. Telling stories. Big and small. From this blog here to the published page. I love being able to play on this stage, having the opportunity to converse with so many of you. I hope to be more available for local events next year and really bring people to the world of Greystone.

And all the worlds to follow.

Where are we headed next?

I’m figuring that out right now. There are 8 books sitting on my shelf demanding edits and another 9 begging to be written. From conspiracy tales to the far reaches of space, from superheroics to a supernatural legal thriller, there are many places to explore coming in the next few years.

And then there is always the second half of Greystone to consider.

This last month has been centered on moving my family to a new home. It’s meant that writing has been on the backburner. No longer though. Mapping out the next year has energized me and the projects coming your way are going to blow you away.

2018 marks the end of Greystone for now.

But 2019? Just you wait. It’s going to be amazing.

Thanks for being here.

None of this is possible without you. I can’t thank you enough for supporting the series, this site, the newsletter and so many other aspects of my work. This has been an incredible journey and it has barely begun.

Stick around. You won’t regret it.

Happy End of Year!

Have a safe and happy holidays! See you in 2018!

The Medusa Coin – The Long Road to Publication

October 30, 2017 By Lou

The Medusa Coin‘s long publication history had plenty of ups and downs over the last decade that I thought were worth sharing. This is a fun story and it makes me look completely unhinged but I like to tell it anyway. The Medusa Coin was never a sure thing for me. When I set out to write Signs of Portents back in 2007 – and if you recall from a previous commentary this was when Signs was meant to be the first and greatest comic book mini-series of all time – there was no sequel planned.

There was no Greystone series.

I wrapped up the first draft of Signs in 2008. I couldn’t let the idea go. I knew there was more to explore and I sure as hell never solved any of the background elements like Beth’s fall, the origin of the Greystone, none of it. So I put some notes together on a second mini-series.

It was called the Seven Sons of Death.

I made it as far as the first issue and some of it survived all the way to the final draft. The rooftop meeting was the climax of the issue with Death’s reveal as the cliffhanger for the next issue. The intro of Samantha Myers was there as well so my family can get off my case for naming the dubious detective after my youngest daughter.

But I never went further. I had ideas on where the story was headed but nothing came together for me and I put it away.

In 2012 I was itching to write. Comics were in the past. Collaboration has never been a strong suit for me. Though I enjoy the back and forth when it works, there were too many times I ended up carrying the load solo and it wore on me. So, genius that I be sometimes, decided to write a novel instead.

Rather than reword Signs into a novel first, since the story was pretty well set, I wanted to try my hand at an original piece. Something new, something fresh.

The Medusa Coin was born.

publication history

I hit a wall immediately. Working full time made it difficult to write. More my own inability to step up and get words on the page, something I have thankfully learned over time.

But I gave it a try nonetheless.

For 11 months I wrote for an hour after work, sitting in my lovely cubicle with no overhead lighting (it gave people migraines or something…) typing away at what would become The Medusa Coin. Why the title change? Seven Sons of Death (I shortened it to Seven Sons at one point) never really sang to me. It fit for a time but I was very happy to stumble upon the Medusa connection and really amp it up in the drafting process.)

At this time I wasn’t huge on outlining. I would sketch out a chapter with some overall notes, maybe a line of dialogue or three, and then jump right in. The result was less than pretty.

I finished it though.

And then? Nothing.

The wheel turns…

Shockingly, I had no plan after this. That was me all over back then. I had a draft, a rough rough draft, but didn’t have the wherewithal to strengthen it on my own and knew no one else would be able to help either.

So it languished. Right beside Signs. Right beside quite a few other projects I hope to revisit someday.

Then I quit my job. And I wrote Signs. Then rewrote Signs. I learned the story behind the Greystone and the connections that brought me to the opening scene in The Medusa Coin.

And I had my story back.

I wrote the first draft of the current (and FINAL) iteration of this book during last year’s NaNoWriMo challenge. 23 days and 85,000 words later the book arrived as if it had always been there.

Why couldn’t it have been that easy back in 2010?

Lots more publication history and background to come on the novel. Have any specific questions you’d like answered about the creation of this book? Shoot me an email at lou@loupaduano.com and I’d be happy to put them in the blog!

Spontaneous Dance Party Sale!

October 23, 2017 By Lou

Lots going on lately down in the basement. One week from the big NaNoWriMo kickoff. Founder’s Day is six weeks out. The fifth book in the Greystone series is slowly being reworked and rebuilt stronger and better than ever. Oh, and I’ve been house hunting to escape from said basement. Know what we need with all this going on?

A Spontaneous Dance Party Sale!

Spontaneous dance party, you ask? I give my eldest daughter credit for this one. Every night before bed she races into her room and asks to have a spontaneous dance party before saying goodnight. And every night she unveils a new dance for us. It’s an adorably, wonderful way to end the day.

So. HERE WE GO.

Today and tomorrow only all three Greystone books are $0.99 each!!

Signs of Portents

Tales from Portents

The Medusa Coin

Amazon  Nook   Kobo   iBooksSmashwords

And for $1.50 –

The Greystone Saga Volume One – in case you missed it the first time around!

Follow me (but not literally – that’s just creepy)

I’m really hoping to beef up my social networks, my e-mail list, everything so consider following me on your favorite site and spreading the word to your brethren. It helps get word out about the books.

If you follow me on Bookbub you’ll learn about upcoming releases and discounts down the line as well.

The Medusa Coin commentary is coming next –

Get your books ready to dive in and explore how the book came to be and how insane I truly am when it comes to putting together a novel. It’s going to be a treat, I promise.

Maybe not as much a treat as a spontaneous dance party sale, but still pretty cool.

Dance it up!

Pathways in the Dark Teaser

October 5, 2017 By Lou

Earlier this week I shared a first glimpse at December’s digital only FREE release – Founder’s Day. Like Resurrectionists before it, Founder’s Day serves as a primer for the rest of the short story collection coming out in February – Pathways in the Dark.

Background for Pathways in the Dark

This was the title of the first book way, way, way back in 2008. I thought it summed up my feelings about the series nicely. Unfortunately it never fit with the narrative being told and Signs of Portents was born from that change.

But the title still fit and I knew it would. Somewhere.

When I put the final touches on Tales from Portents last year, I realized how much I enjoyed the short story format. It was a nice break from writing out those epic novels and really opened up new ways of telling tales set in the Greystone universe.

I come from a comic book reading childhood (he said staring at his Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus next to his computer…) so I’m accustomed to larger epics broken up between smaller – yet still important – moments in a character’s life.

That was the purpose behind Tales. Background on the characters and the world.

Pathways in the Dark is very much the same, yet – to me – it feels completely unique. Tales was a prequel. With Pathways, everything is in the present.

The importance of the moment…

Theme became the connecting point for these stories and all tied back to the title of the collection. Pathways in the Dark represents a glimpse at each character following the events of The Medusa Coin. From Ruiz to Myers, from Soriya to Loren, each player faces an obstacle that calls their path forward into question.

Pathways is about how to find your way back to the light at the darkest of moments. How to build a life from ashes. How to succeed. And how to fail…

Pathways in the Dark arrives in February

pathways in the darkThe shadows are growing around Portents.

Detective Greg Loren attempts to recover from injuries sustained during his hunt for the Medusa coin but is pulled into more darkness as the full extent of Erikson’s attempt at immortality is discovered.

Soriya Greystone works to connect with the city she protects, stumbling on fluctuations caused by the evolving Bypass and an ancient cult attempting to bring back the god, Anubis. On top of the dangers surrounding the pair, the Founder returns to the city and brings death with him.

Danger is around every corner and Portents grows darker as war inches closer to the surface in these tales from the Greystone collection.

War is coming…

I said it last time. We’re rolling downhill on our way to one explosive finale come next September. Pathways takes you one step closer to the end.

And not everyone comes out of the dark…

I can’t wait to share more from this incredible project. Lots of cool tidbits and teasers coming closer to the end of the year.

Thanks for reading.
