Hammer and Anvil Pre-Order Alert

August 12, 2019 By Lou

The Greystone-In-Training trilogy kicks off with Hammer and Anvil, now available for digital pre-order!

What is the trilogy all about?

A Circle of Shadows put a close to certain story elements and certain characters. But it was never meant to be the end of the story. Nor was Signs of Portents meant to be the beginning. There was always more to the past, more to the history of these characters.

Especially Soriya.

This trilogy centers on Soriya during her training years with Mentor. Specifically, her final three years of training. Hammer and Anvil picks up with a 15 year old Soriya and her first true test as the next Greystone, under the watchful eyes of her teacher and the chaos that ensues.

It’s an absolute blast returning to Portents for this special trilogy. Not only does it offer insight into Mentor and Soriya’s relationship but it plants some seeds for where the second cycle of the main series is heading.

Pre-Order Hammer and Anvil today!

It’s her first case and it might be her last.

Soriya has worked her entire life to become the Greystone—protector of her city, Portents, against the growing shadows of myth and legend. All her efforts are in jeopardy when she is struck down by the destructive power of the Minotaur.

Soriya must now find a new path. Only one thing is certain—she’s going to need help.

Beth, a researcher with insight into the city, has been locked in her own mystery—hunting for the recently stolen hammer of Hephaestus.

Working together to unravel the secrets hidden in Portents, Soriya and Beth must learn to trust the other’s unique perspective. However, they aren’t the only ones seeking answers as the Minotaur turns his rage on the city… starting with Soriya’s beloved teacher.

The secrets of Soriya’s training are revealed in the first adventure of this new Greystone trilogy!

Special Bonus for Box Set Buyers!

A sneak peek at Hammer and Anvil has been added to the box set for those who purchased it. A nice tease for the start of what I hope will be a fun journey with the characters, both new and old.

Hammer and Anvil arrives on October 24th!

Writing Update – July 30, 2019

July 30, 2019 By Lou

It’s been a strange month in the basement over here. I try to keep forward momentum on a number of projects at all times. The last few weeks, though, it hasn’t felt that way to me. Like I was just spinning my wheels instead of actively closing out projects.

Sometimes it’s just the nature of the beast, I guess.

Writing Update

DSA Season One

The season is off to the editor. I was glad to see it off but since I sent them over I’ve had some thoughts about checking different areas again. Anything to drive myself insane with worry.

Over the course of August the entire season will get one more pass to close things out.

If you read my newsletter last week, the release dates are set for the first 3 books in the season.

The Clearing launches October 9th. Promethean arrives November 13th. And The Bridge will be available on December 11th.

Pre-Order info coming next week!

Greystone-In-Training

My alpha readers finished up Hammer and Anvil last week, so I am in the process of fixing up the draft before giving it one last pass.

I love coming back to Greystone, so much so that I outlined book 2 this month. The title made my wife giddy with joy. Very excited to share more details next month.

The trilogy is really shaping up and I think it’s going to transition nicely back to the main series when it’s time for books 6 through 10.

Greystone

I’m making a real effort to flesh out the back half of the main series before diving into the drafting phase. Greystone was a great lesson in how to plan things out, how to plant seeds and see them come to life with each new release. The problem was my timetable and how quickly I was forced to go from book to book  without any downtime in order to hit my deadlines.

Really want to plan that aspect better by having a clear path from the flashback novel of book 6 to the series finale in book 10. Right now, there are some notions here and there (including some awesome tidbits for books 7 and 8) but nothing concrete yet in terms of the overall arc.

Talk to you next month about the launch of Greystone: The Complete First Cycle and more!

Catering to Old Fans or Reaching New Readers?

July 2, 2019 By Lou

There comes a time during the writing process where you have to take a step back and figure out exactly who your target audience is for this story. Every writer does it. Everyone pulls apart their book, script, short story, etc. and tries to determine who in their right mind will be reading this.

Over the last few years, I’ve come to love my Greystone readers. They are a stalwart bunch and they keep me inspired to continue with the series. When it came to closing out Hammer and Anvil, though, I suddenly hit a roadblock because of those readers.

Hammer and Anvil is meant to be the first in a new trilogy of stories. One that uses pre-existing information/lore to rebuild its world for a new audience. So who is it meant for exactly? Is it meant to cater to the old guard with nods to stories that take place later in the timeline? Or is it for new readers as it is the first book in a series?

And so the debate begins!

new readersI put it off as long as I could. It wasn’t until I was about halfway through the draft that I hit upon the heavy exposition chapters of the book. That’s pretty standard for me. Always taking the easier path to feel my way into a story. Action pieces. Dialogue chapters. Easy stuff.

But with the exposition came the realization that I needed to find an answer and quick. Soriya’s first appearance in the story is in chapter 2. The Greystone puts in an appearance as well. But new readers don’t know anything about them, do they? They don’t know what the stone is or how it works or even who this woman is who is wielding it. They would be lost without some information.

Old readers already hold that knowledge. Exposition at this point would be boring to them, having read through possibly 5 adventures with Soriya already.

So who wins here? Does one fanbase trump the other?

I started having this back and forth during the drafting phase and then again through the editing process.

Changes made to reach new readers

Exposition won out. There are nice touchstones from the other books in terms of setting up certain environments, but the desire for new readers to be able to dive into this novel was more important in the long run.

I went back and punched up the background for each player introduced. I tried to read things with fresh eyes and really build everyone’s role as well as the city itself. The story has definitely grown in the telling and I think it is stronger because of it.

This is not to say old fans will be bored. I’ve hit a number of different moments that connect readers to stories from the main series. Loren’s cigarette addiction. His sleeping on the couch. The Franklin Center. A Circle of Shadows. And more. Plenty of nods for readers to recognize while not confusing newbies in the process.

New challenges with each new project

It’s amazing to think about. When I set out to write Hammer and Anvil it was meant to be for newsletter subscribers. When it grew, so did my expectations for the final product. That included making a cohesive narrative, it meant finding a bridge from the first book to the third, and it came with the new challenge of finding new readers while also capturing the zeal of the ones who have stood by the series from the start.

Not an easy task. But one I’ve been excited in exploring over the last few weeks.

I think you’re in for a fun ride no matter how much experience you have with Greystone.

Thanks for reading.

Writing Update – June 18, 2019

June 18, 2019 By Lou

This was a strange place for the writing update to fall but who am I to argue with the boss who puts this schedule together? It’s been a crazy week of e-mails, formatting, clean up, going through old notes, marketing, ad copy and more insanity.

I’m an absolute scatterbrain so it can only mean one thing: I finished a book!

Writing Update

Hammer and Anvil

The draft is DONE! I’ve been reading through the book over the last few days before I dig in on the edits. I typically hate this part of the process and while, yes, I have been screaming at my lack of vocabulary, this one is in pretty good shape.

My plan is to tear it apart and piece each section back together until I’m happy with it. Hopefully before the end of the July 4th holiday so I can pass it along to some alpha readers for approval.

DSA Season One

Some good feedback has already come my way. Looking forward to going through everyone’s notes as soon as I finish up on Hammer and Anvil.

Then it’s time for one last readthrough before passing it off to the editor. Can’t believe how quick time is flying now.

Cover reveal for the first book is next week!

Greystone: The Complete First Cycle

The box set is available for pre-order right now and will be on sale officially on August 15th!

All five books in the Greystone series contained in one massive volume. Over 1,500 pages of Soriya/Loren goodness. From the grisly murders of Signs of Portents to the cataclysmic finale in A Circle of Shadows, every monster, myth and legend is here for you!

For only $0.99! It’s crazy, I know, but I want people to snag it while they can for such a steal. I want people to love the characters as much as I have over the course of these five books.

Very exciting to see this one come together after years of work.

Writing Update – May 28, 2019

May 28, 2019 By Lou

Between jury duty and the Nickel City Con I can safely say this month has been PURE CHAOS. A maddening dash from one project to the next without a second to catch my breath.

It’s been a good exercise in endurance, for sure.

Writing Update

DSA Season One

I finished! A few weeks later than originally intended but I made a final sweep of all six books before passing it off to some trusted alpha readers. I plan to do another sweep at the end of July before it heads to the editor for clean up. I enjoyed the binge though. It was cool to see the season as a whole and work on each book through that lens.

This has been an insanely intricate project for me and I’ve enjoyed the challenge. I keep finding areas to tweak, little points to insert, all in the hopes of building a more cohesive final product. Unfortunately, it’s time for me to let someone else tell me what’s missing or where I’ve completely gone off the rails.

Nervous excitement about sums it up for me. Excited to share. Nervous for the reactions. We’ll see how it goes!

Hammer and Anvil

writing updateI started the draft last Tuesday. Yes, I realize how backward I am with this one. It was never my intention to have the cover completed before the draft, or even to have it booked with my editor before writing a single word of the book.

Won’t happen again. (I hope…)

Anyway, the draft is coming along. I’m just shy of 20,000 words as you read this. Or about a third of the way to the end.

Not that I write in any linear fashion. Chapter 42 is done. Is Chapter 1? Negative.

The next two weeks are going to be hardcore writing sessions. It’s been awhile since I drafted so the last few days have been rough ones but each new chapter comes easier than the previous one.

Really looking forward to seeing this one come together. There are some great character moments throughout. And Pratchett has a fantastic line that cracks me up every time I think about it. (Good ol’ Pratchett…)

Reading

writing updateI don’t typically share my comic reading. I know my audience prefers books to my love affair with four-color heroes. I wanted to share this one anyway.

Bruce Jones wrote the Incredible Hulk from 2002 to 2004. At the time it went over my head. I was a Hulk fan but I didn’t really appreciate what it was I liked about the character. It certainly wasn’t the smashing or the idiotic Hulk Smash dialogue.

It wasn’t until I revisited this run that I realized Bruce Banner was what brought me to the book. He was the hero of the story. The survivor of this terrible ordeal. That’s probably why I’m the only person on the planet that actually enjoys Ang Lee’s Hulk film or why I would have loved to have seen Edward Norton’s version of Incredible Hulk.

Bruce Banner, on the run, losing control, fighting for his life to keep this monster inside. That’s my kind of Hulk book and why Bruce Jones wrote a helluva run on the title. It falls apart in the end but the first 20 issues are an absolute treat to devour over and over again.

Thanks for reading.

Hammer and Anvil Cover Reveal

May 21, 2019 By Lou

Just a short missive today. It was a whirlwind weekend at the Nickel City Con and I’m in recovery mode. What a great show. If you made it and picked up a book, you have my thanks. I hope you enjoyed the experience and that your first dip into the Greystone world is a good one.

What comes next is going to be even better!

Hammer and Anvil Cover Reveal

This was never meant to be. When I originally conceived the training period pieces describing Soriya’s formative years they were always smaller in my mind. Short stories akin to those found in Tales from Portents or Pathways in the Dark – 8 chapters, in and out, with a brief nod to the larger story at play.

They would come out one per year and only for newsletter subscribers. Easy peasy.

Then I started outlining. The story grew. The pieces became more intricate and the narrative took over.

I couldn’t be happier with how it is coming together and wanted to share the cover design as soon as I received it!

A special thanks to Marraii Design for the phenomenal job at putting this together. Nat is a true artist and takes such care to hit all the right beats with her covers.

Release Info

I’m still nailing down a specific date but you can expect Hammer and Anvil to come out in early October of this year! It’s going to be a crazy month but I am so freaking excited.

Let me know what you think of the cover at lou@loupaduano.com. I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for reading!
