Writing Update – October 30, 2024

October 30, 2024 By Lou

This writing update is brought to you the letter W, for What the hell happened to this year? Well, here we go again, I guess.

Writing Update

Greystone

I’ve been in the middle of a massive overhaul of the Greystone series. What does this mean exactly? Well, for starters, I took a deep dive into Signs of Portents. Some people–friends and family–think I’m insane for doing so. They love the book as it stands.

But it isn’t universally praised. Those critical of the book aren’t wrong. I would never write Signs the same way if I were to tackle it from scratch. I’ve changed over the years and my sensibilities have shifted. I wouldn’t say for the better, but I would like to think I’ve grown into the role of novelist respectably.

Anyway, I retooled the whole book. The narrative is the same. The mystery at the heart of the book remains intact. There are slight additions for pacing purposes. The most jarring changes are with POV. I switched POVs mid-chapter A LOT in Signs. I found ways around doing that for the revision, building up images in some cases and switching events around in others.

The book is vastly improved. VASTLY.

writing update
Look, Ma, the book number!

New covers!

The overhaul also entails new covers for the series. I tried–really, I did–to get on-brand, genre covers for the series. I hated every design sent my way. The characters models looked weird and the edge was lost on the monster angle. None of them felt right to me.

The original covers always made the series for me. So, I went back to the well and found someone able to update the original covers to include… THE BOOK NUMBER ON THE SPINE! (WOOHOO!)

Not only that, but hardcover editions are coming your way next year!

The Signs edit has been my life for the last two months. Now, it is time to turn my attention to Tales and the rest of the Greystone series to get the books prepped for a huge push in 2025.

Terminal Point

I’m doing my final lap on the DSA Season Two finale. I love this book, personally, which is not something I so readily say when it comes to my work. There are some great Ben-Morgan moments in the book as well as a cliffhanger that will have you screaming at me for quite some time.

Be sure to pre-order your copy now for only $0.99!

Coventry

Next month, I’m back to work on Coventry to get the two short stories already written into shape for release in December. I don’t usually like to play it this close, but this year has been a mess all around for me. Don’t worry about the tales, they’re a blast and you’ll enjoy them. I just wish I had more time to play around in the world before the launch.

Is that it? Come on, Lou.

I know, right? Pretty lackluster performance from me this year on the writing side. Next year, the game changes, hopefully. A little less worrying about what’s already out and more focus on building new narratives.

Greystone Audiobooks are coming!

June 16, 2020 By Lou

I was hoping Signs would be up and running by now, but ACX is quite a bit behind when it comes to their review process. Other than that, though, I’m excited to share with you the news that Greystone Audiobooks are coming your way this year!

Why audiobooks?

I’ve received a number of requests from readers about delving into audio over the years. Audiobooks are the fastest growing market in the book business. People love listening to narratives, be it novels or podcasts or even talk radio (yes, that’s still a thing).

With the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives (outside of our current situation, of course) some people don’t have time to relax and crack open a book. Audiobooks are the perfect solution. I’m excited to share the Greystone series in this new format.

Meet J.S. Arquin

I’ve been talking up this fine gentleman for some time now. J.S. is the incredible author of the Crimson Dust series, and the narrator of the Greystone audiobooks. He brings such a dynamic voice to the characters and nails every inflection during the book.

I’m very fortunate to have him in my corner, bringing these books to life.

Be sure to check out his other work as well.

Release Schedule

Obviously, I have no control over this. ACX runs at their own pace. J.S. finished Signs back in April and it has yet to show up on ACX. When it does we might be able to gauge the timeline better. My hope is to have Tales from Portents and The Medusa Coin set and ready to go by the end of the year so we can close out the first cycle next year.

That is my hope. Let’s see what reality has in store for us.

This couldn’t have come at a better time…

The best part about going back to the beginning and diving into Signs is the opportunity it’s brought me to continue the narrative. Greystone has been my primary focus this year – from the prequel trilogy, to audio, to the new serial coming out later this year, and now to the final major arc in the main series.

I’ve been dancing around it for months in preparation, but have taken my first steps to closing out the Greystone series.

More news to come in the writing update later this month!

A Circle of Shadows Commentary – Return of the Sirens

November 8, 2018 By Lou

The author commentary on A Circle of Shadows continues! SPOILER WARNING ahead!

Loose Threads…

The Night of the Lights described in Signs of Portents was a defining moment in the novel. It was meant to be this door-opening experience where not everything that came out was immediately shoved back into the box, or in this case, the floating green orb of light.

The Sirens were always supposed to play a greater role in the series.

No one questioned their arrival in Signs. No one questioned why they were mentioned.

They should have. If Signs is the only book you read, there should be an answer within its pages to some degree.

When I closed that initial book, I knew I had to address them. The Sirens were now roaming the streets and had to be dealt with. I knew this.

I just didn’t know how to hand this loose thread.

The Medusa Coin

I tried to squeeze it into The Medusa Coin. The Sirens were supposed to show up at the beginning or the end in a very Blade 2 moment, where Soriya jumps them and tells them they were foolish to think she forgot about them or some other nonsense. (You know what I’m talking about… if not, see the film. It’s fantastic.)

It didn’t fit. The narrative was tight, focused on Erikson and the Charon. Even if it hadn’t been, the conceit that the Greystone was out of control took another threat off the table. At least until Soriya solved that piece of the puzzle.

Pathways in the Dark

A seventh short story almost made its way into the collection. It revolved around a conspiracy created by the Sirens, who were manipulating principal players in the city.

I couldn’t get it to work. And Pathways had a full line-up I wasn’t willing to cut to make room.

I needed the Sirens resolved. I needed an answer to this situation I created with my genius planning of loose threads.

loose threads

A Circle of Shadows opens the door…

Then came book 5. I had a slot to fill in the opening chapters where members of the circle converge on a supernatural threat. I had no threat.

A small problem to be sure.

The Sirens filled the role perfectly.

Then I took it further. The original outline had the two sisters taken down by the circle and the third, Thel, given a second chance at life by the Greystone. That was the end of the story for the Sirens. Originally…

It didn’t close the loop on the character.

And I didn’t want another dangling thread.

Thel’s involvement in the climax of the novel came as a direct result of this need to close their story. It tied into Soriya’s need to be a force of good instead of destruction. It tied into the theme of second chances seen throughout the narrative.

I was so excited when it worked out. When she is struck in the back and begs Ruiz and Myers to let the Greystone know she made good; that gut punch to Myers for the way she treated Soriya? That was why that scene exists. That is why the Sirens made the cut for this book.

So glad they did.

The epilogue scene.

It wasn’t in the original outline. Hell, it wasn’t even in the original draft. Or the first revision.

When Thel shows up as Myers’ new partner, setting up a brand new dynamic for the police force going forward, it was brand new for me as well.

Unplanned. Off the cuff. Completely out of nowhere writing.

Wish I could take credit for it. Truth be told, in the original draft, Thel died in Heaven’s Gate Park. Shocker, right? With the amount of bodies dropping who would have noticed?

Exactly why I changed it. I needed survivors. I needed characters that had depth and foibles to carry on for the next five books. Thel proved herself to me over the course of the writing she had that in her.

All because of that damn loose thread in Signs of Portents.

Thanks for reading.

Portents is a city like no other—and one that Detective Greg Loren can’t wait to escape. Since his wife’s death years earlier, Loren has looked forward to the moment he can leave the city of Portents for good—and never look back.

But fate has another plan for Loren. Called back to duty, Loren finds himself embroiled in a series of murders that has shaken the city. Together with Soriya Greystone, a young woman with unearthly powers, Loren must work quickly to find the otherworldly being that is killing citizens of Portents one at a time. Loren is tasked with deciphering the mysterious signs left at each of the crime scenes…even if it means traveling to worlds not his own to do so.

Fast-paced and thrilling, Signs of Portents will leave you on the edge of your seat and turning page after page.

But wait, there’s more!

Tales from Portents is only $0.99 this week! The follow up/prequel chapter of the Greystone Saga is less than a buck for your reading pleasure.

Tales from Portents explores the city’s immersive history, including stories of Loren’s descent after his wife’s death—and his opportunity to have her rise from the grave. Among the pages, Soriya battles gremlins, navigates lessons with Mentor, and meets the werewolf Luchik. Follow new characters with expansive histories as they come face to face with the horrors of Portents—both human and otherwise.

From the Greystone Collection, Tales from Portents navigates the cases that make even Detective Loren lie awake at night.

Offer ends September 17th!

A farewell to Greystone…for now…

Putting these five books together has been a dream come true. I’ve loved every minute of crafting each tale, of building each story. Even the challenges that came with it, from self-editing to hitting my own crushing deadlines. I’ll be sharing a longer, more in-depth farewell in a couple weeks but didn’t want to miss this opportunity as well.

Every sale, every promo or plug for this series has been to showcase my appreciation for being here through it all.

Soriya, Loren, Ruiz, and the rest are, and always will be, an integral part of my life. I want to share that with you as often – and as easily – as possible.

Thank you again for being here for this launch!
