Writing Update – February 2, 2017

February 2, 2017 By Lou

February already?!! Not cool, Calendar Man. Not cool. Here is your writing update on this lovely Groundhog Day:

Writing Update:

writing updateTales from Portents is on sale in TWO WEEKS! But I’m sure you already knew that. Interested in an advance reader copy of the book? Let me know.

The Medusa Coin – THE EDITING CONTINUES. It’s been a slow process. Every time I tackle a new project I have to relearn my own system. This week I’ve been researching like crazy to shore up the story. A couple key moments needed to be reconfigured and a new element or two inserted to really drive some of the character arcs home.

It’s coming together though and my plan is to hunker down the entire month and put the final touches on this one.

Pathways in the Dark – All that research has had an unintended bonus (and another reason The Medusa Coin is going a little slower than usual for me). Researching one project helped me figure out the key components to Pathways, allowing me to finish up the outline for the collection coming next February.

Another set of six tales, these take place immediately after the events of The Medusa Coin. I’m very happy with how the project is coming together and can’t wait to script the outlines this month. Lots of hints at what is ahead in the series and some old friends from Tales get their moment to shine in this collection.

Reading

Lots of time spent researching lately but I did make the time for two new releases from DC’s Rebirth titles:

Flash: Lightning Strikes Twice – Joshua Williamson takes on Barry Allen and gives him a nice well-rounded cast to play off in the series. There is quite a bit going on in this book but that is how it should be for the Flash. Frenetic pacing and equally exciting layouts made this story a page turner for sure. Carmine Di Giandomenico has a great style for the book and is able to maintain the twice-monthly schedule nicely.

I was a little letdown by the villain’s reveal though it was understandable and acted as the perfect counterpoint to Barry Allen’s role as the Flash.

I only ask that DC reconsider the insane lightning coming off the Flash on every page. It is distracting as hell and if I was standing by him at a crime scene I would be completely freaked out.

Justice League: The Extinction Machines – I wasn’t sure about this one. For me, nothing beats Grant Morrison’s run on JLA in the 90’s. (Oy. I’m old.) Geoff Johns did a great job as well, but let’s face facts. The man ALWAYS does a great job. It’s a sickness with him.

Bryan Hitch and Tony Daniel offer up a strong first arc with the new Justice League. They play up the tension between Batman and the “new” Superman well. I enjoyed the banter between the Green Lanterns and the Flash. Aquaman’s role was a little out in left field and should have at least connected slightly with the others but it came together in the end.

A great opening tale with lots of bombastic action and widescreen visuals. Can’t wait to see how they build on it.

That’s it for this writing update. Fingers crossed that Spring comes early!

Thanks for reading.

Writing Update – January 19, 2017

January 19, 2017 By Lou

I was hoping to really dig into this one and deliver some grade A sarcasm and topnotch witty remarks that are patented Lou material. Instead, my toddler decided to enter her quarterly scream-fest and I am too bleary eyed to think straight. So let’s get to the writing update!

(Then sleep. With my headphones blaring. In the car. Down the block.)

Writing Update!

writing update

The PROOFS are in. I’ve been hip deep in reading through Tales from Portents “one last time” this week. Why the quotes? Because I know there will be another readthrough. There is always one more readthrough.

I’d like to thank my lovely wife for joining me in this endeavor. She found two glaring issues with Resurrectionists that I have spent the last two hours repairing. If you noticed them, apologies all around! If not, then what the hell are you talking about?

The Medusa Coin self-edit is chugging along. SLOWLY. I think I’ve figured out my main issue with the narrative and the changes I’ve noted, on copious amounts of stickie notes running throughout my basement, are going to really ramp up the overall storyline.

I’m very excited to pull the book apart and really tear into some of the weaker sections. You’ll thank me for it, I promise.

One final thought on editing this go-around and yet another apology if it has bothered you as much as it does me now. Littering. The damn word is everywhere in my books. I can’t stand it now. I am editing that word out of my vocabulary for the foreseeable future. (UGH. Buy a Thesaurus jackass. Oh wait, it’s right there, littering the floor. Idiot.)

The Signs of Portents sale is going on now. 99 pennies will get you a brilliant copy of the first book in the Greystone series.

I started outlining a new project. (I KNOW. Just wait.) I was talking with my editor to line up our schedules for The Medusa Coin and we started chatting about future series. And I told her about what I’m thinking comes next.

Big mistake.

I’ve been outlining since. Character moments. Overarching themes. Specific threats. Connecting factors.

No details yet for you. But damn, is it going to be a helluva time.

Thanks for reading.

(WHAT? No reading recommendations? Sorry. Can’t hear you over the screaming toddler down the block. Next time.)

A Look Ahead at Greystone

January 9, 2017 By Lou

Every once in awhile there comes a point when the mental conversation that continuously swims in my brain needs to spill out on the page. Or in this case, the blog. I can keep things pretty straight most of the time, tucking little nuggets of information into posts and then keeping the sweet revelations for a later date.

This time I wanted to share what was ahead in the coming year and beyond.

Not only is my hope to whet your appetite so you’re as excited as I am for the upcoming collection, Tales from Portents, but also to add some accountability for myself. A little extra motivation to hit my deadlines (the earlier the better) won’t hurt and give me a roadmap to follow.

2017

February 17th – Tales from Portents. The first short story collection in the Greystone series. A prelude to the events of Signs of Portents, Tales was originally meant to serve one purpose: set up the events already depicted in Signs. As I plotted out the stories I wanted in the collection I realized that it could do much more than that.

It could act as a bridge between novels. Both thematically and in action. A project I was very nervous about publishing has become one of the most influential pieces of the puzzle for what is to come in the first cycle. Trust me, each story plays a part in what is coming.

September 8th – The Medusa Coin. The second full-length novel of the series and a story I have had kicking around my head since 2009. New characters are introduced and a great new threat as well. A few of them actually. When I originally wrote the outline there was a little trepidation.

The Medusa Coin stands as the midpoint for the first cycle of the series. Not only did it need to build on the first novel, there also had to be a path to the final chapter as well. Subplots from seeds planted in Signs start to form a bigger picture without losing sight of the main thrust of this standalone novel.

A tightrope act to be sure, but I think it will work out.

December 1st – Founder’s Day. Much like Resurrectionists, Founder’s Day is a novella offered ahead of the second short story collection. When developing the lineup for the next collection I thought back to Tales for inspiration and realized there were plenty of threads left to pull.

Including a direct sequel to Resurrectionists itself. If you haven’t read it yet, I won’t spoil it here. Suffice it say, Founder’s Day plays off the events witnessed in the novella with a heavy nod to the history of Portents laid out in Signs. The script came together beautifully and I am looking forward to drafting it once The Medusa Coin is set.

2018

February 9th – Pathways in the Dark. The second short story collection plays off the events of The Medusa Coin. It follows our leads directly from the threat posed and builds on the decisions made at the end. Each story stands alone but all connect to the larger framework of the first cycle.

Elements from all the previous books play a role in Pathways. Some of the tales within have been kicking around the old noodle for years so to finally see them come to life is a great feeling.

September 14th – A Circle of Shadows. I’ve been holding back this title for months, waiting to see if someone would ask me about its mention in Signs of Portents. Wondering if people noticed it sitting in the background when they read early iterations of Tales from Portents. This is the big finale to the first cycle.

Every time I close my eyes I see the pieces taking shape. I see each side of the conflict becoming more and more complex and developed. This won’t be like the first two full-length novels. This is bigger in scope and in cast.

There have been threats loose in Portents for longer than anyone has known.

And they are about to come to light.

Get ready.

Get excited. I know I am. Putting this series together (and laying the seeds for the next trilogy) has been one of the best things about the last year. (Don’t tell my kids that though…)

Thanks for reading.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

December 22, 2016 By Lou

happy holidaysA very merry and happy holidays to everyone out there in Toyland! How did the holiday season sneak up on me so quickly? It tends to happen faster and faster every year. I blame my children, but then I do most of the time anyway.

They still love me though.

Off track quickly here. Anyway, an early Happy New Year to all of you and a big thank you for following along on my continued adventures into possible insanity. Kidding. That happened long ago.

These last few months have been amazing. Sharing the world of Greystone as well as my writing tics has been an incredible experience. I can’t wait to show you what’s coming next year! More Greystone, more giveaways, more and more and more!

This will be the last post this year. I will be back on January 5th with a writing update, assuming I can find my computer under the mountain of batteries and Step 2 manuals for the wee ones. After that I’ll be back on the Monday/Thursday routine once again.

Don’t forget to pick up your free copy of Resurrectionists if you’ve been putting it off. (Why would you do such a thing?) Everyone needs a little sacrilege during the holiday season. It is a great primer for what you will find in Tales from Portents, coming this February. Coming quick too! I better get those proofs set!

And if that isn’t enough for you, a little holiday present from me to you:

The Medusa Coin

I freaking love getting a new cover from Kit Foster Design. Always an absolute treat.

The Medusa Coin will be out in September 2017. A lot more about that and the second half of Greystone’s first cycle coming your way in the next year.

Happy Holidays!

Be safe this holiday season and share some love.

Thanks for reading.

Writing Update – November 24, 2016

November 24, 2016 By Lou

I like to take stock on where I am with my work and I feel it’s important to share that with you here. Every two weeks you can find out what I’m currently writing and what I’ve been reading.

Writing

The big news first, of course, is that the first draft of The Medusa Coin is finished! NaNoWriMo has been a tremendous experience all around but seeing the draft set in three weeks is unbelievably gratifying. There were a few days I felt like walking away but I had an incredible amount of support from family and friends. Many thanks to everyone keeping me at the computer and plugging away.

The Goodreads giveaway for Signs of Portents is over! Congrats to the winners. Your books will be on the way at the end of the week. Enjoy them! I’m excited to have some new eyes on the series and hope you’ll stick with the series. Lots of story left to tell.

After a successful challenge with NaNoWriMo, I figured now would be the perfect time to step back and enjoy a small vacation. INSTEAD, I did something stupid. While I was drafting The Medusa Coin, on one of my slower days, I accidentally outlined the next short story collection. (You heard me. Accidentally. Not my fault.)

Rather than leave it as the couple pages of notes it currently is I think I might take my momentum and really have a go at fleshing out the stories involved.

Unlike the upcoming Tales from Portents which serves as a prequel collection taking place before Signs, this new collection will fit squarely between The Medusa Coin and the final novel of the first cycle. I’m dying to tell you more about these next two books, especially the fifth and final in the cycle but that will have to wait a bit longer.

Reading

Not much in this regard again. Apologies. Now that the draft is off my plate I plan to catch up on some reading before I get too far into the next project, including binging on my favorite four-color mags and a novel or two between holiday related festivities.

I have a lot to be thankful for this year including having you here with me on this crazy journey.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Writing Update – November 10, 2016

November 10, 2016 By Lou

I like to take stock on where I am with my work and I feel it’s important to share that with you here. Every two weeks you can find out what I’m currently writing and what I’ve been reading.

Reminder Alert: Only one week left to enter the Goodreads Giveaway for a chance to win a signed copy of Signs of Portents! Plenty of time left to spread the word and get people excited for the book!

Writing

NaNoWriMo is in full swing and I am chained to my folding table in the basement to crank out the second full length novel in the Greystone series. The Medusa Coin is a story I’ve been waiting to tell for way too long. To have the opportunity to maximize my productivity during this month long sprint is incredible.

I’m looking to complete the entire first draft for the NaNoWriMo challenge this year and have been plugging away diligently to make it happen. As of this writing I am 30 chapters in at a word count of 34,042. It definitely takes some getting used to being able to write almost full time compared to my normal schedule (the ever fading nap time). Very happy I’ve taken the challenge this year to test out how things will be once my two wonderful munchkins hit their school years though I do miss daylight (Not that there’s much of it to enjoy these days.)

You can read about my NaNoWriMo experience as well as some tips to prepare and survive the grueling month over at The Write Life starting next week.

currently writingTales from Portents

The line edit just came back from my brilliantly talented editor, Kristen Hamilton and I will be digging through her notes over the next two weeks before the proofreading phase begins. February is right around the corner so I plan to make this my full priority once I survive November. I’m looking forward to sharing this project with you. Very surprised at how well it came together considering its origins.

Kristen was nice enough to entertain some questions – okay, a lot of questions – about her process. I plan to share them over the next couple of weeks. A nice primer for how much she brings to the table as an editor and how to make the most of the collaboration.

Reading

Unfortunately, with more writing time the reading portion of my day has ground to a halt. I have been lucky enough to get more reading time with my three year old so if you’re looking for some scintillating reviews of Dora the Explorer or Pete the Cat I’d be glad to share them. Just not here. (As long as my daughter enjoys them, that’s all that matters, right?)

Thanks for reading.
